PLAINFIELD, IN.--- Officers Hall and Kleeman completed the Instructor Development course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, on Friday February 6, 2009. This course prepares officers to train other officers in all general areas of law enforcement. Officers will begin teaching new recruits later this month, at the Tell City Police Department. Our department will benefit, as we have only had one instructor until now. Our officers will benefit from the areas of instruction that these officers will offer. I know these gentlemen did an outstanding job, because anything less would not have yielded their certifications. Congratulations on your achievement! (Photo T to B: Officer Kleeman, Officer Hall.)

CANNELTON, IN.--- Officers will have one more tool to add to their belt; however I don't think that this tool will actually fit. Chief Kenneth Kellems has worked diligently to obtain rifles for our local agencies and on Monday it finally happened. After waiting for numerous months, a shipment of Colt AR-15 rifles finally arrived. The rifles were purchased by Perry County Prosecutor Bob Collins to be distributed to 3 area law enforcement agencies. Officers from the Cannelton & Tell City Police Departments along with the Indiana State Police will be issued the firearms. 6 rifles went to the I.S.P., 4 to the Tell City Police and 3 to the Cannelton Police Department. Collins advised that the money used to purchased the rifles came from a special fund and did not cost the county taxpayers any money. Officers will begin a training program for the new rifles, under the instruction of Sgt. Dickenson, a certified Patrol Rifle Instructor.

Our Police Department, along with the other law enforcement agencies in and near our county participate each year with a project entitled "Shop with a Cop". This is such an awesome opportunity to show dedication to service to our community and citizens. Officers within the F.O.P. challenge area residents and businesses to donate to this wonderful cause and every year I am reminded of what giving and unselfish people that we serve. My personal thanks goes to everyone who has donated to this event. You made a very special Christmas this year for some great kids!!! Check out a couple photos below.

Sgt. Dickenson

How many Dickenson's does it take to shop?

Chief and his wife join in on the fun.
Plainfield, Indiana---
Officers Jeff Dickenson and Lee Hall recently graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course. The mandatory course for Officers is 4 months long. The officers received over 600 hours of instruction on subjects like Criminal Law, Traffic Law, Emergency Vehicle Operation Course, Investigations, etc. Both Officers had outstanding test scores and did a great job there. Good Job, fellas.
Officers from the Perry County Sheriff's Department and Cannelton Police Department recently attended a radar certification course. The course was held at the Cannelton Police Department and was instructed by Cathy Harrington, a newly appointed radar instructor from the MPH company based in Owensboro, Kentucky. The MPH company manufactures and sells the radar units that the Cannelton Police Department utilizes. The course prepares officers for using stationary and moving radar units. Some officers were already certified, but a refresher course is good for any officer.
The MPH company has granted us usage of a portable digital radar trailer unit. This unit is posted at different locations throughout the city where speeding vehicles have been known to be a problem. The unit posts the legal posted speed limit and then flashes the speed of vehicles that approach it, reminding drivers to slow down. The portable unit will be in Cannelton in the coming weeks. This educational unit will be used for approximately 3 days in one location and then traffic enforcement by officers will follow in the same area following the removal of the unit.
Photos from this course will be in the Training 101 tab in the following few days. Check them out!

During the week of July 16, 2007, Sgt. Eric Dickenson returned to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for a week long training in firearms. "This course allows our department to have a firearms range instructor right here at home," Dickenson said. "This benefits the City of Cannelton & surrounding agencies," he concluded. Since Cannelton is located over 2 1/2 hours away from the police academy, this will save Cannelton a lot of money in fuel and vehicle wear. This week long course consisted of 2 proficiency screenings, where officers must score a 95% accuracy in marksmanship. Sgt. Dickenson scored a 96% on both the marksmanship screening and the written examination, which only requires an 85% score to complete. The courses taught was everything from teaching the problem shooter to proper weapon cleaning. Sgt. Dickenson completed a Instructor certification in January 2007 that allows him to instruct police officers in general police subjects and skills. This course is required to teach weapons qualification, which is done 2 times annually.

Officer Johnson, above, recently accepted a position with the Indiana State Police. Officer Johnson will be reporting to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in the near future to fulfill his training program. This intensive 23 week academy will prepare him for the duties required to be a Trooper. Officer Johnson, who has been an officer with our department since 2004, was a member of the department's High Risk Warrant Team. He investigated numerous cases and assisted in numerous arrests while on the department. His experience and dedication will be truly missed. Good Luck Charlie and Congratulations!!!

The 2007 Law Enforcement Banquet was Saturday May 5th 2007. It was a wonderful evening that featured Steve Fraiser, guest speaker, a fantastic slide show (thanks to Derrick Lawalin), food fellowship, and awards. This year's Officer of the Year awards was presented to Lewis Stubbs by Reserve Commander Kleeman and Chief Kellems, for his devoted service to the citizens and children of our community. Kleeman, armed with letters from former Chief Cox and Cannelton City School's Principal Ginger Conrad, explained how Officer Stubbs exemplifies the characteristics of a great officer. Chief Kellems also presented 2 civilian service awards to Ches Humphrey and Cassandra Wheatley for their support of our department.
