New State Traffic Law goes in effect 07/01/2009

Graduated Drivers Licensing

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

Beginning July 1, 2009, Indiana will implement new Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) requirements for probationary drivers under the age of 18. Since young drivers are at greater risk for becoming involved in traffic crashes that result in severe injury and death, specific restrictions have been put into place to help teens safely travel Indiana’s roadways.

1.  This affects drivers 16 & 17 and ONLY drivers issued a new driver’s license after 07/01/2009.

2.  These drivers, as stated, may not use any type of telecommunication devices while driving.  Violations result in a citation and fines like that of a speeding ticket.

3.  These drivers may not participate in any type of deferral program for traffic infractions.

4.  Drivers under the age of 18 may not drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for the first 180 (approximately six months) days after getting their license.

After the first 180 days, you may not drive during the following hours:

  • Sunday through Thursday, after 11 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Friday and Saturday, 1 a.m. – 5 a.m.
  • This corresponds with our curfew ordinance.

EXCEPTIONS

Drivers under the age of 18 are permitted to drive at any time if traveling to or from work, school, or religious event, or if accompanied by an individual with a valid Indiana driver’s license who is 25 years or older.  {This has changed from parent or guardian 21 or older}.

5. Driving with Passengers

If you receive a probationary driver's license on or after July 1, 2009, you may not drive with passengers for the first 180 days after obtaining your license, unless you are also accompanied by a licensed instructor, an individual with a valid Indiana driver’s license who is 25 years or older, or a parent, guardian, or step-parent who is 21 years or older. You may drive with your child, sibling, or spouse during the hours allowed by law.

As always….every passenger in every vehicle needs to be restrained by a safety belt.  This includes no riders in the back of a pick-up truck.

New Indiana State Law regarding seatbelts goes in effect 07/01/2007

Starting 07/01/2007, motor vehicles operated on Indiana roadways, regardless of the type, will require the following:

1.  All persons, regardless of position in the vehicle MUST wear a seatbelt.  This includes backseat passengers.

2.  All motor vehicles, including pick-up trucks and SUV's are requiring all passengers to wear a seatbelt.

3.  In other words to make it simple for everyone....if you are in a motor vehicle in Indiana, regardless of where you are located you MUST wear a seatbelt.

4.  Person are not permitted to ride in the back of pickup trucks.

The Cannelton Police Department is a proud member of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute project "Click it or Ticket" and "Operation Pull Over".

Our department, along with the Perry County Sheriff's Department and Tell City Police Department participate in the projects at different times of the year.  During this "project time" we educate the public on the ever changing seatbelt laws and enforcement efforts are stepped up on violators of Indiana traffic laws.  Look for increased traffic patrol enforcement during high volume traffic holidays.

This page was designed to educate the citizens of Cannelton and Perry County of newest seatbelt law, that takes effect 07/01/2007.  "Buckle Up!"
