The 6th annual Ontario Girls' Chess Championships, held on this past Saturday of the Victoria Day weekend, was another resounding success. The tournament this year featured a record of over 100 players from kindergarten to grade 11, up from 74 participants last year. As always, the participants received medals and participation awards, a pizza lunch, and souvenir T-shirts.
The event also featured a competitive puzzle contest for the girls, a simultaneous fundraiser tournament by Yuanling Yuan (who will be representing Canada at the Women's Chess Olympiad), as well as separate tournaments for siblings and adults.
We would like to thank the large number of volunteers who helped with set-up, transportation, registration, organization, and clean up. Their assistance was absolutely critical, and without it, it would be impossible to have the tournament accessible to all players. We are also grateful to Yuanling Yuan, Ontario High School Chess Champion Hazel Smith, and Canadian Women's Champion Natalia Khoudgarian for presenting the awards.
Finally, as announced during the awards presentation, we have decided to donate the profits from this year's tournament to UNICEF to support relief for children affected by the recent disasters in Myanmar and China. Because we try to assign fees close to projected costs, these amounts are not particularly substantial; nevertheless, we are pleased to announce that we will be contributing $100 to support the cyclone relief in Myanmar, Burma and $100 for earthquake relief in Sichuan, China.
As always, we have also donated a small amount per player to the Chess’N Math Association in appreciation for their continued support of this tournament and scholastic chess in Canada.
Thank you all for another successful year,
Corinna

I would like to say a few words regarding the tournament. This year, we had more than 70 participants in the main tournament—a record for the OGCC since its inception in 2003. We have learnt a lot over the past five events, but there is still great opportunity for a better tournament next year!
I would like to thank all of the parents and teachers for passing on their compliments--your comments and suggestions are always very helpful. I would also like to emphasize that the event would not have been possible without the hard work of our crew of volunteers: Mr. and Mrs. O’Craven, Matthew, Lai, Mr. And Mrs. Lai, Jason Chan, Michael and Karen Wan, Chalini and Sashi Lankage, Eric Zhan, Mrs. Zhan, Mr. And Mrs. Cheng, Mr. and Mrs. Yuan. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.
My gratitude extends as well to Fieldstone Day School, whom generously offered the use of their facilities. Much thanks goes to our special guests: Natalia Khoudgarian, the current Canadian Women Champion, for presenting the medals; and Yuanling Yuan, for keeping our rest area exciting with a simultaneous exhibition (in which she did not lose a single game!). Thanks to Danielle Jedral for her T-shirt design. Thanks also to anyone who helped out, that may not have been mentioned here.
In the end, however, it is the continuing support and dedication of all the coaches, teachers, and parents that keeps chess, and especially girls' chess, alive and strong in Ontario. Please keep up the great work.
