A tour for those with an interest in the former
Stalag VIIIB / 344
Prisoner of War Camp
Monday 14th - Friday 18th September 2009
4 nights / 5 days half-board
£750 per person (there is a single supplement of £136)
We have already taken five groups to visit the site of the former Stalag VIIIB prisoner of war camp at what used to be known as Lamsdorf in Poland (Upper Silesia). There is an excellent museum there now. We see where the camp used to be, a reconstruction of one of the huts, the station where most prisoners arrived, the various memorials, as well as seeing the museum itself and the surrounding area, and watching a film about the camp. We also visit a small museum at Blechammer and visit the place where so many prisoners were made to work in the mines. In Krakow we take the opportunity to pay our respects to the British prisoners who died at the camp, or while on working parties in the area. Our groups have been made up of former prisoners of war and of family members of former prisoners.
The tours are always moving for the participants, but enjoyable too, and many new friendships have been made - and some old ones re-started! There have been lots of memories to share, of course, and stories to be told.
With the co-operation of Professor Dr. Bashkim Lahi

18th - 28th September 2009 - £1,725 (sing. sup. £180).
Wonderful archaeological treasures, largely unknown: the amazing, ancient city of Butrint (see issue 26, December 2007) described by Virgil as ‘Troy in miniature’; Apollonia, one of the most important cities in the ancient world, used by Aristotle as a model in his analysis of oligarchy; Durres with the largest amphitheatre in the Balkans; Tirana, Lezhe, Schkodra and much more. This is a very full itinerary with the opportunity to see current archaeological projects as well as getting to know this lovely country and its people.
