Cal wins a great game against UCLA 'B' team with a double overtime for the 3rd place slot at the WWLL playoffs. Each player played with heart and intensity on the field, and stuck together through until the end. Great transitions, off-draw wins, one of the best defense teams, and a solid offense, Cal left it all on the field today. Nobody could think of a better way to end a tremendous season for Cal Club Lacrosse's first year with a coach, first year as a Divison II team, and only third semester as a team.
This was also the last game for the graduating seniors, Julie Duncan, Rachel Lee, Christine Mansfield, and Ariel Wang, as well as our British foreign exchange student, Lexi Finnigan. Good luck, and thanks for a great last game!

Cal suffered a close loss to Sonoma State during the first day of the WWLL playoffs at UC Santa Barbara. The girls played tough, smart, intense lacrosse, and walked off the field at the end of the game with dignity and their heads held high. Congratulations, Cal, for their hard work and comraderie, and their clean play and respect for the game. We might have lost the game, but we stayed winners, and gave it our all.
Congratulations, as well, to the three Cal players who were chosen for the D2 all-league first team. Lillian Nelson, Stephanie Ullrich, and Sophie Zug stood out to everyone in the league with their intensity on their field, their encouragement for their teammates, their leadership, and their heart. Anyone who has seen these girls play know that they deserve this award.
Last, but definitely not least, congratulations to Lillian Nelson. Lillian was chosen for the WWLL Division II MVPaward this year. As one of the captains on this team, she has lead each member to success, and supports each of us on and off the field. Nobody who has seen her play will know that she picked up her first lacrosse stick only one and a half years ago. She plays better than many seasoned players, has more heart than most athletes anyone will meet, and puts her all into every practice and every game. She is a force to be reckonned with, and has easily earned the respect of all people in this league, and has the love of each of her fellow teammates. Congratulations again, Lillian, to a wonderful season. We love you!
Cal will play UCLA noon today at Storke Field 2 in UCSB. Go bears!

CAL is going to playoffs!
Cal won a huge game this weekend against Santa Barbara "B" team, ensuring their spot as the number 3 seed in the DII WWLL playoffs coming in April. With the best midfield transitions this team has seen all season, solid, confident play in the defense and offense, and each player playing one of her best games this season, Cal dominated the field. The score volleyed back and forth in the beginning, with Cal consistently losing by one. At halftime, the score was tied at 5-5, and then Cal turned on the wheels. Santa Barbara "B" was able to come back and score 3 more, but it wasn't enough to stop Cal's momentum, ending the game with a 12-8 win for Cal.
As a first year Division II team, and only the second year this team has existed, this is a huge accomplishment for Cal. Never before has any other team been able to achieve the same success. Congratulations to Cal Women's Club Lacrosse!
Playoffs will be held down in Santa Barbara on the weekend of April 18.

Congratulations to our Golden Bears for another win for this up-and-coming team! Continuing on our winning streak, now at 6, we knocked off UN-Reno Wolfpack 15-4 today at Maxwell Field on another rainy Sunday. As usual our team had numerous players tally a goal showing that we have many players that can finish as apposed to one or two like many other teams. So far, this very rainy season and recently a heavy dose of mid-terms haven't slowed us down as we repeatedly get big wins, putting us into position to control our own destiny towards reaching our goal, to make playoffs. Our first two home games this season and in our program's history have been wins allowing us to take that mini streak into next week's huge game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO) "B" where a win could very possibly reserve our spot in the Division 2 WWLL League Championships.

Santa Barbara Shootout was a complete success! With a 4-0 win record at the shootout, Cal's on a great start into, possibly, the play-offs. With newer players making spectacular moves, and older players using everything they know, everybody worked with intensity, tenacity, and a great supportive, positive attitude. Cal showed everybody that though we may only be a first year D2 team, we have already built up a great program with extremely talented players. Our team can boast that we have players who may play mostly defense but can also be great offenders, and great offence players proving their ability to build a strong defense.
Come support Cal in all of their upcoming games!

Today, the new season, the Golden Bears' first official season, got underway as the Club takes on other WWLL members at Cal Playday (20 minute scrimmages). The Bears played five games, four of which came against WWLL Division I established teams and the other coming against UC Davis 'B' team. Although no score was kept it was apparent by the amount of defense the Bears played that their only victory came against Davis "B." "This was a tremendous learning opportunity for our young team," stated Cal head coach Nathan Hendel. "Playing against teams of this quality will push us to start our season in fifth gear while also seeing how good some of the WWLL Division I teams are, giving us something to strive for."
Starting the day with Santa Clara was no small task as the pre-season #4 WDIA team in the nation, the Broncos, who demonstrated how the college game should be played. Cal will get another opportunity to see Santa Clara next week when the Bears travel to SC in what will be the program's first official game.
Next the Bears battled another tough team Cal Poly SLO. The Mustangs are the pre-season #2 WDIA team in the nation. Once again it didn't take long to see how the seven-time WDIA national champion (in only eight total WDIA championships) Mustangs got to that level. From the first draw Cal Poly was on the attack. However, the Bears held tough and had some offensive opportunities.
After lunch the Bears played Davis "A." Surprisingly, the Aggies seemed to be the best team the Bears faced on Sunday. They were fast, big, aggressive, and had a no quit attitude. "Even though it's just a scrimmage, this is the best I've seen the Aggies play in this being my fifth year coaching in the WWLL," said Hendel.
The next game against Chico State held a little more intrigue than just a scrimmage. For the past four years, now Cal coach Hendel was head coach of the Wildcats. Taking the team to the league Championships all four years helped put Chico State on the map as a women's lacrosse program. The Wildcats are still a top five caliber team in the WWLL and are nationally ranked in the top 25. That ranking was demonstrated as the Wildcats pushed the Bears hard. But, the Bears played real well in the loss, but the game was close allowing Cal to walk away feeling good. "That was fun playing them," Cal's coach said. "It was nice to see the players I coached and recruited during my years there. They are going to be a tough team this year for whoever they play. I'm happy for them.
The last game was against Davis "B." The Bears quickly took control, dominating throughout the 20 minutes winning the game by an estimated score of 8-1. Following the game Hendel said, "It was nice to come away with a win today. Our team worked real hard today and in preparing for this weekend. Although these games were just scrimmages, they were able to give us some confidence, play some good teams, see what we need to work on, what we're doing well, and most importantly finally get some games in instead of just practicing against each other."
The Playday was a success overall for the Golden Bears, especially when other coaches were complimenting Cal by saying they were impressed how the team looks in only its first year. Yes, the Bears still have a lot of work to do but it was a good start to what will hopefully be a great season.
