Dying

Back Alley on Christmas Eve

Silence Stark

In Darkness Deep

Frost lies heavy on the floors

rising damp on all walls

is cold sheen of ice

for you passed away

to walk among the stars

and took the sun beyond my eyes

beyond my darkening sight

even beyond the reach of my heart

to leave me all alone

with fading memories like sepia photographs

curling in scuffed frames and growing old

The moon does not shine

in this house of stone

here no stars twinkle

in shadows dark and grim

where this prisoner in twilight cell

shuffles shackled in iron chains

to slowly shambling Time

and it is so very lonely being me

with you now gone to leave me

all alone with frost heavy on the floors

rising damp of ice upon sunless walls

Come back, come back

I need you more than do

faded galaxies of far-flung stars

bring back, bring back

full moon and shining sun

smile again for me

and laugh once more

for my feet are numb

my heart is frost and soul is ice

and I cannot even weep

here in the darkness so very deep
