Sun Flowers in a California garden

Watch this sunflower GROW!

February 2007

February 24, 2007,
It was sunny in the morning and it looked promising to a wonderful day, but suddenly we got clouds rolling in by 10am in the morning... I worked for a while from 7am to 9am sowing some seeds that will be prepared for my garden! Yes I am not starting to prepare my works into my garden now. I don't have any photos of those seeds I am preparing, but I could tell you the names so they sounds pretty familiar to you as the months pass. Firstly I'm planting Red
Sun Sunflowers, German Sunflowers, and Aztec Gold Sunflowers. The patch were I will be planting these isn't shown in these photos, but I defiantly need to post as soon as I start planting them all into the ground. I took these photos today the 24th of Feb. and I could say that everything looks quiet bit the same doesn't it? Well Actually if you look very closely in the distance you could see the green coming up on the far right raised garden patch. Yes, you guessed correctly it is sunflowers. No Paul Bunyans, but Common Sunflowers. That patch has been growing volunteers for over 3 years now. I let that patch grow wildly since Common Sunflowers are actually wild sunflowers that are found through out highways and such in the United States of America!...

Okay, closer shot now... As you can see the lush green is starting to show! I'm pretty much very excited. Once I start seeing that these common sunflowers are starting to sprout I jump for joy ready to start planting my Paul Bunyan Sunflowers. There are more than 200+ sprouts in this patch alone! The good thing about all these is that there is a survival of the strongest. Sunflowers get singled out, which means I don't really need to thin my plants since they do this automatically. The strongest ones will reach the sky high and faster then the others surroundings. Then the weakest will grow much more slower and bloom late in the summer at the bottom floor of the Sunflower Forest.

February 17, 2007 in the morning, a Saturday morning at that. My sunflower seedlings that I started in my little bio-dome have started to open up completely in my pots now. So now I am going to move them to the front side of my house. I started my front yard first since I wanted to have my first blooms in the front. I also like to call that my testing site. I like to test new sunflowers at that spot. Currently that spot will be occupied with more Paul Bunyan Sunflowers sadly. I wanted to plant maybe some of my Aztec Gold Sunflowers, but I'll just leave it at that. I already had the neighbor complement on my sprouts I was planting early in the morning, around 7am. I had more than 13 sprouts recorded and ready to go this morning. In the front I will only be planting 10. So I still have a few...

I'm proud to say, I think I'm going to have myself a wonderful year ahead. Even though I have negative thoughts in my head saying this could be a horrible year of summer heat here in California. We will have to definitely keep close watch of our future forecast. Since we are in a El Nino year...  It's a thought that I really take hold of.

Here are the photos where these babies will be planted!

February 13. 2007
Hey, well it finally stops raining after 5 days with rain. I'm kinda of happy that it finally rained here in California. It was a good long soaking rain that was well needed here. I surely did benefit from the rain
thats for sure. My garden got heavy dose of rain and now I'm starting to see some light showing in my garden. I see little sprouts of Common Sunflowers popping all over the place in my volunteer side of my garden. I'll be sure to post photos of this soon! Because this is just marking the beginning of spring here for me! I'll tell you that! Here are the first sprouts of Sunflowers you will be seeing! We do have a LONG Journey to take and unfold, but lets not get all into that currently. These sprouts shown here are Paul Bunyan Sunflowers which will be planted in the front side of my house. These will NOT be planted in my garden just yet, as I am still holding back to plant sunflowers. I plan to start preparing to sow seeds by March 12th or so. This is because I want to be able to plant directly into the ground by March 25th, THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING! Now that's a celebration IM WAITING FOR.

Well here we are on the 8th of February and we are expecting some heavy rainfall tonight. The first really heavy rainfall of the year and I’m a bit excited, but I try not to expect lots. I started some sunflower seeds in my little homemade bio-dome I have created last week. It was done just by a Donut Container and let me tell you! It works great! Then I put two paper towels then the seeds. Well the seeds are now started to sprout the seeds are the Paul Bunyan Sunflowers. I will not be planting these in the garden though. The ones that are currently sprouting as those will be placed in the front side yard so passerby can view these large heads. I love these little bio-domes and I feel like I will more than likely be using them much more through the years and for the next few weeks of planting as I sow away.

Also notice that my tables are set up and ready to go. I have to put tables up so my chickens do not peck at my tender little plants. Let me tell you though, chickens love to eat tender plants. So that’s why I have them raised as shown. I also have my fresh soil in my wheelbarrow ready go.

Hello, well it's February 3, 2007. It's been pretty warm here in Northern California. Haven't seen any rain in awhile, but forecasters are predicting that we will start seeing a wet pattern. I'm pretty much happy that spring is just around the corner now. I'm ready to start planting my sunflowers. I want to see what I can do for this year's summer! I kind of worried over this year since we could have the hottest on record and a very horrible drought. Hopefully all this thinking I'm getting in my head is all just a FAKE and none of this is really true, but the only thing I could do is just wait to see what happens.

Well, as you can see in this photo here my sunflower garden in it's current state. The soil has been turned up and ready to start planting. I can already tell my how warm its getting just because the top of the soil is drying quickly. Now what worries me the most is that I have a bad slug problem when my sunflowers start sprouting and that leads me to put slug bait. I have so many birds flying all around and now that my soil is turned up I have notice lots of birds flying to my soil eating whatever they are finding. Which does not bother me now, but I do not want to kill the birds! Because I do not want them eating the Slug Bait I will be laying out as soon as all my sprouts take action. As soon as I finish this harmful bait to animals and the environment at best? I will soon switch to a much more safer one which I really have read about. Slug-go is what it's called. Something in that way...

Here is another shot of my garden, firstly the one above is facing east while the one below is facing west. Something to really note in both of these pictures in the RED plant you maybe noticing. Well that is my large planting of Geranium that is definitely dieing! It's pretty sad since all of them are dieing so rapidly. This is due to the deep cold we had here in California. It was the coldest in 7 years I'm hearing. This cold was so unheard of, I mean it does not stay below 25 degrees for over 5 nights in a row! Simply unheard of! I did not have enough time to react to these conditions that everything seems to just wilt away. Hopefully there is a light to this tunnel of misery!

Got something to say? Say it here...
