Caledon Natural Area

Caledon History

Caledon Natural Area has a rich history that dates back to the 1600's.   Caledon is part of the Virgina State Parks system and was established in 1974 after the generous donation of the acreage and home from Mrs. Anne Hopewell Hewitt Smoot.  The park consists of 2579 acres,  there are 5 forest trails that are open year round.  The Boyd's Hole Trail is the 6th trail and leads to the Potomac River.  The Boyd's Hole trail is open from October 1 through March 31 and is closed the remainder of the year to insure that the eagles that nest along the river are given a greater chance of survival.  Those of us at Caledon strive to make Caledon a place that you can come to learn about our natural world.  Therefore, we offer numerous programs throughout the year and invite you to take advantage of these programs. Take some time away from the hustle and bustle of your busy life and enjoy a hike or a picnic or even an educational program.  Breathe in some fresh air and just relax the day away at Caledon.
