PURE PUNK ROCK THERAPY – Reviewed by Dave Ryan – 24th June 2005
I first saw Guns on the Roof over nine months ago and was amazed at how good they were for such a young band. Since then they have matured and progressed at an alarming rate and have turned into one of the best new punk bands in the U.K. Still with an average age of only seventeen they have produced a CD which must be a contender for album of the year.
From the opening bars of Derailed, you are hooked, the guitar work of Danny Sharp is awesome, a massive wall of sound, crunching guitars, backed with the throbbing bass of Mark Miles. ‘What do you want,’ ‘Going all the way,’ ‘Hangman,’ ‘No regrets,’ superbly written songs with massive hooky choruses. The progression of this band can be seen in the re-recordings of ‘ Drugged up ’ and ‘ Sixteen ,’ far superior to the original recordings of the demized ep. ‘ Get out of my life ’ a contender for best track on the album grabs you by the throat, shakes you around and spits you out. There are so many catchy songs on this album, at least 5 to 6 worthy of single status. ‘ Michael Myers, ’ shows how good a singer Aaron Gunn (Harris) is. His vocals are fantastic, gritty but amazingly melodic. We see another side to his style in ‘ Goodbye,’ an acoustic song with haunting lyrics dedicated to his mum who brought him up single handed, but died suddenly when he was nine, ‘ Then you left me here alone, dazed and confused, and I didn’t know where to go – Now I’m going to say goodbye.’ Next track Alfie with its strong harmonies and superb hooks, it gets better and better, culminating with a fantastic cover of the Abrasive Wheels classic ‘ Vicious circle. ’ This is the fastest I’ve ever heard this song played and shows just why sixteen year old Joe Sefton is being talked about as one of the best drummers around. Not only does this album have fantastic tunes and massive chantey choruses, it has some strong and personal lyrics. ‘ The icecaps are melting the ozone is thin, Lord what have we done’ (Hangman), ‘ My mates fucked up he’s all drugged up ’ (Drugged up), ‘ Wrecking homes and wrecking lives ’ (Demized), I feel that something aint right, tonight’s gonna be the night to start a fucking war ’ (Derailed), ‘ All this shit going on in my Head ’ (Get out of my life).
This album is the story of four working class kids from Leeds, all from broken homes, all full of anger and sadness. This is their therapy, this is – PURE PUNK ROCK THERAPY. 10 out of 10. |

BARSE 77 CD-"Negative Reaction"
|
"Yes! I LOVE this shit! Durham, England's Barse sound SO authentically "UK 1977" that it's scary! And I mean that in a GOOD way. These blokes have all the raw, snotty, anthemic vigor of a young Slaughter and The Dogs or a less-poppy BOYS, but they don't sound like rip-offs. They sound like the real thing. It's as if they just stepped out of a time machine. There are eighteen songs on this record, and they're all goddamn BRILLIANT. I'm talking fast, tuneful, totally-fucking-great punk rock with real limey vocals. I'm talking bratty, primitive, catchy-as-hell three-chord noise. Barse have it all: style, attitude, and great songs to boot. I could listen to this record all day. God bless the English." Rutledge/Now Wave Zine |
