Kirkley A (Home)
The new season started off in intresting fashion as we took on Kirkley A. With 4 players missing including newly appointed skipper Jim, an opening batsman and an opening bowler (£5 fine each by the way boys for a lack of dedication). Most prayers were seemingly answered as Caister was bathed in a week of glorious torrential rain, Somewhat bizarrely and stupidly, groundsman Tennant somehow managed to make the pitch playable. So stand in skipper Ted had the honour of leading a side of 9 players into battle on a grey miserable day.
Losing the toss Caister were unsurprisingly put into bat . Openers Ted and Holmes set off at a measured slow pace on the slow outfield and a pitch that was doing pretty much everything possible, both had a little trouble hitting the ball. Holmes was the first to leave after gloving through to the wiki, followed pretty quickly by Rupert Brown a victim of an absolute pearler. After watching from the other end skipper Ted decided to join the party, completely missing a full toss and was bowled. Paul Brown then had the pleasure of receiving a grass cutter to dismiss him LBW leaving Caister in a rather unhealthy state at 16 for 4 . After recovering from his nose bleed due to being so high up in the order floppy haired French, wearing girl's hair accessories (i tell no lie), proceeded to almost steady the innings along with Andy "BRAINS" Myhill, French particularly surprising his watching team mates with a couple of shots on the offside including a four which was almost a technically correct straight drive. After hitting a glorious straight drive for four himself Brains then decided to miss a straight one, get bowled and skip back to the pavillion whistling and feeling happy and content as normal. French realising he had mistakenly reached double figures did the right and honourable thing and gave their fielder a bit of catching practice. The rest of the batting didn't hang around for too long and Caister finished 48 All out after Fatboy Tennant somehow managed to spoon a leg side full toss back to the bowler for the last wicket.
After deciding to not take tea and go straight back out (good job Pies wasn't playing, we might have actually seen him cry!) and seeing the pitch was offering plenty of assistance Ted used the Captains perogative and opened the bowling himself. After being dissuaded from putting all 7 outfielders in the slips, Ted settled into an early rhythm of bowling an off stump line, unfortunately he kept getting confused between the right and left hander. However Ted still managed to get a couple of early wickets thanks to a couple of agricultural shots and him somehow managing to bowl on the stumps. With Rupert failing to find consistency he was replaced by the super fit, ever youthful Fatboy Tennant who proceeded to bowl at a ferocious pace, which almost had Wiki French considering not standing up to the 40mph bullets. As Tennant used his years of experience in tandem with Ted's ability to find all of the dodgy areas of the pitch there was a steady fall of wickets, each picking up a couple of wickets. However with the advantage of having 11 players Kirkley always seemed to have enough batting and Caisters best efforts weren't enough despite a commendable effort in the field.
The only way is up from here....

Heathersett (Home)
With the football season now over, it was now a case of getting back to the norm - with KBJ, James, Simon, Pies and Wedon all returning. After winning the toss, Captain Jim opted to field on a pitch that appeared to be offering a little.
Openers Rupert and Pies failed to get the breakthrough, although KBJ - with his first spell for 8 months ripped through the upper-middle order taking 4 wickets, with Pies taking a screamer of a catch to dismiss skipper Ellis. Jim held up the other end, as did FBT, and the screws were really being turned with Heathersett 107/7 with 12 overs to go. However, that’s about as good as it got in the field as the visitors tailed wagged impressively with Ted nor a second spell from Pies unable to slow down the run flow, coupled with their Lynx bowling techniques spraying it all over the place ! Heathersett finished on 167/7.
The Caister reply started as normal - Ted walking back to the pavilion. Rupert then joined Mabel and the pair batted well putting on good runs to keep the home side in the hunt. Rupert was then dismissed after a good knock leaving the Kerrison brothers to try an steer the home side to victory with 80 still needed. Mabel - dumbfounded by the 7 foot spinner played the only shot he can against spin - the slog sweep, missed the ball, fell over, and was stumped. Jim and KBJ then went for the win but both failed, walking back to the pavilion scoring 20 apiece. The remaining 6 went down like a pack of cards as Caister, from a position of strength at 125/3 were bowled out for 137.
Oh Dear…..

Loddon (Away)
Caister's first away game game of the season led them on a magical mystery tour to Loddon. Jim's continued success as a tosser (of a coin) led to Loddon being put into bat. Caisters bowlers got off to a good start keeping things tight and not allowing the Loddon batsman to settle, after good but wicketless spells openers Buffalo and Rupert were replaced with the wiles of Tennant and the raw talent of Pies. Tennant was successful in gaining a few wickets, Pies however realising he was facing another wicketless day decided to injure his back and start crying. Caister kept Loddon to a run rate of about 2 an over until Loddon's big hitting Nunn started to dictate the innings, with a variation of big hitting Caister found it difficult to protect the shortish boundaries on the quick outfield. The only highlight being Buffalo attempting the break the stumps in half with a successful run out as Loddon finished on 189.
Caister reply started in disappointing fashion with Chubbo Brown missing a straight one, this bought the ever consistent Mabel to the crease alongside Ted, both batsman looked comfortable at the crease with Ted even succeeding in hitting his first boundary, looking like he was starting to find some form including the patented slip drive for 4. Ted then tried one slip drive too many and was caught in the slips. This bought Rupert to the crease and along with Mabel they scored quick runs and started to take control of the match. Bringing the hundred up with ease Caister were almost cruising to victory. Rupert then played a rather ugly shot straight into the hands of square leg to bring a fine innings to a disappointing end. Skipper Jim walked to the crease purposfully and walked back not much later. Buffalo Brown then came to deliver his own brand of big hitting and along with Mabel looked to take control of the match again. All was going well until the dreaded call of YES NO came from Buffalo leaving the man with no grip on his shoes, Mabel, trying to turn quickly and only succeeding in going down to the ground as though he'd been shot, as he desprerately and unsuccessfully tried to crawl over the line Buffalo looked on with tears starting to fill his eyes. Umpire Ted tried to console the distraught Buffalo Brown and get his head straight as Mabel trudged off the pitch on 40. Buffalo Brown realising the pressure was on him to guide Caister to victory decided to not to look at the next ball, miss it by a mile and get bowled, leaving the pitch and seemingly taking Caisters hopes with him. As the shadows lengthened over the pitch making the ball rather tricky to see Caister's tail didn't shake let alone wag as Caister fell to a courageous 163 all out. Pies remained not out and playing for his average
SO CLOSE.....

| North Elmham (Away)
On the back of an impressive display last week the team arrived at Elmham full of injuries. Mabel Kerrison failed a fitness test and was out, KBJ had picked up a knee injury and Jim, French and FBT were still pretty much still completely out of their faces from the previous night’s social activities in the bars and clubs of Cambridge.
After winning his 4th toss in a row Jim immediately put Elmham into bat, and the decision seemed justified when KBJ fooled the batsman into thinking he was poo after an outrageous attempt in testing the pitch with his first ball, picking up 2 wickets. However, that was about as good as it got in the field as the hangovers began to kick in and the standard of fielding became absolutely shocking - step forward Jim, FBT, Brains and KBJ to name but 4. Weetabix dives and blurred vision did not help matters. After another horrendous misfield by skipper Jim, the mood was lightened slightly when Paul Robert Green French was completely pole-axed by their Man Mountain of a batsmen attempting a quick second.
The ball was then despatched to all parts of the ground and if it wasn’t for Rupert Brown, Caister would have been chasing a lot more than the 211 they were set for victory. The dressing room was a very downbeat place, as almost the whole team had never been successful in reaching a victory target in excess of 200.
Things got worse after Rupert went 4th ball of the innings.
Brains Myhill and Jim then went about restoring some pride with Myhill particularly pumped up smashing the bowling for a quick fire 22. Ted came in, then got out attempting a tennis style smash which went all of 5 yards and was caught. KBJ then came to the crease before a playing a hilariously gay shot and getting caught. Meanwhile at the other end Jim had raced to his 50 showing some good form at last ! He was then joined by Pies UK but attempted to drive a bouncer and was caught at gully for 57 and any hope of victory was surely gone with Caister 107/5. Paul Robert Green French then steadied things with Pies UK, putting on 40 against a lot of full tosses. French was then caught behind and Paul Brown came into to hit a quick few, but what was about to happen at the other end was completely un-precedented. Pies UK lashed, smashed and bashed the bowling to all parts resulting in 21 required off the last 2 overs for victory, with KBS at the other end. He then hit four, dot, dot, four, six, four to send the watching crowd absolutely MENTAL !! KBS then hit the winning 3 runs with 2 balls to spare to send the Caister players into ecstacy, with Pies UK finishing unbeaten on 71, and chants of ‘Get Your Belly Out’ lasting long into the night…..

Garboldisham A (Away)
After last weeks nightmare against Yarmouth, it was important the boys got back to winning ways to stay in the Promotion hunt, and it was a relief that Jim, Robert Green and Holmes were back, and Fatman Fat was the only regular missing and remains somewhere beyond the sea…
After winning his 5th toss out of six Jim decided to field as rain threatened and with the first ball of the match suffered a bad injury to his ankle upon the impact of his 10 yard run up - the remaining 11.5 overs to be bowled from 2 yarders… It was opening bowler FBT who took glory however getting 2 in 2 balls and then nearly swallowing a tracer bullet which tore his shoulder almost clearly off his body - dropping the catch in the process. When the mighty Myhill took a wicket in his first over and the Pie Boy doubled his season,s wicket tally, the Caister Boys looked to be cruising to a possible victory before potential rain set in…
However, what goes up must come down - LETS REWIND TO NORTH ELMHAM…
Butterfingers returned as the next pair put on 80 whilst being dropped at least 7 times. Must be a record somewhere. However Pies UK took another slice of the Pie and Rupert grabbed 2 to bowl out the hosts for 172 - some 50 more than they should have gotten.
The reply started slowly with Mabel trying to moo a straight one and being bowled. Jim joined Brains and things were going well until a leaning edge by Myhill sent him packing. It was now imperative Jim and Rupert build a solid partnership, Jim however let the blood rush to his head as usual and was caught at mid-on trying to hit over the top. The returning Holmes then doggedly started repairing the innings only for Rupert to unfortunately get caught on the Mid-Off boundary attempting a straight six - please see Mabel for help with that Rupert… Ted came and went again cheaply. As if you were surprised… Pies UK missed a straight full toss, Wedon missed a straight full toss, and The French was run out taking on a second. When Holmes departed for 30 it was all over, the shining light being that both Chubba and FBT managed to trouble the scorers, ensuring Pies UK was to pack the bag.
Must do better next week girls, we folded like the Sunday side we used to be…..

Kirkley 'A' (Away)
After an unimpressive run of results Caister travelled down the coast to fellow strugglers Kirkley ‘A’ hoping to return to winning ways . Kirkley won the toss and decided to bat on a flat hard pitch which looked to offer minimal assistance to the bowlers. This certainly was the case for the 1st 15overs as the ball was dispatched to all parts of the ground despite the opening batsmen being very fortunate. They raced past the 100 mark in little more then 20 overs and it seemed the Caister batsmen would have a big total to chase. All credit to the bowlers though, they fought through the gale force winds and bowled Kirkley out for what seemed a very modest 160. The bowlers had done their job; it was now the turn of the batsmen to stroll us to a comfortable victory.
What looked like a easily achieveable total changed slightly once Mabel had informed his fellow colleagues that a one ‘Turrell’ was playing for them. A sharp bowler who has had several ‘heated’ confrontations with Caister plying his trade for Kessingland on Sunday afternoons. Well after hearing this Pies started to get flashbacks from ‘99 and tears began to roll down his cheeks. Brains Myhill also had to be physically dragged out to the crease with Mabel who was ‘up for the fight’. After 5 overs Caister were in dire straights, Turrell’s big reputation had worked wonders as he took 3 wickets for very little runs. Brains, Rupert and Phil the unfortunate victims.
This brought Jim in together with Mabel and they slowly started to rebuild the innings, with Mabel seeing off Turrell and Jim facing the ‘lollipops’. Disaster however struck when Mabel edged a loose delivery to slip and Jim tried the ‘infamous’ Mabel straight six drive and got bowled. This lead to Caister being 70 for 5 with victory still possible if the batsmen kept their ‘heads’. Pies came in and pooed his pants after seeing Turrell warming up again so decided to get himself out for a solid 0. French then joined Ted at the crease and was unfortunately run out when Ted’s ‘Terrets Disease’ came out of the closet, as he started to shout random crap which lead to French storming off the pitch. Chubbo came in and supported Ted, who all of a sudden started to hit the bowlers to all parts and it looked like he could redeem himself and win the game. Disaster struck though as Turrel was brought back into the account! Ted smashed him 2 all parts and the Caister players were dancing down the streets getting ready to celebrate a much needed victory. Ted unfortunately lost his head and decided to charge down the wicket and try to hook a Yorker. After this, Caister slumped to 140 all out.
Cricket is a team game so individuals can’t be blamed for their individual mistakes. But I think its fair to say Ted lost us this game with a real Vice Captain’s innings. Well done Ted.

Kirkley Sports (Home)
After last week’s inadequate performance, Caister faced another of Divison 4 strugglers Kirkly Sports at Fortress Allendale Road. On a wet rainy day Kirkley won the toss and ‘surprisngly’ invited Caister into bat on a very damp wicket. Mable and Myhill strode confidently to the crease and looked forward to a strong opening partnership. Unfortunatley this didn’t materialize as Myhill was sent packing after being completely outfoxed by a late inswinger from Bessey. This brought Jim to the crease with his younger brother and like last week they began to build a solid partnership taking the total past 50 after around 15 overs. Jim however became confused about which sport he was competing in and decided to poll vault over the stumps to complete a quick single. Unfortunately he was run out 2 yards above the ground. Robbie came in and went whilst Mabel was using the Johnson ‘slip drive’ to good effect and he brought up his 50 with a monster hook over square leg. Unfortunately like what happened to Ted last week, Mabel realized the mamouth responsibility he had on his shoulders to score a big runs and decided to try and pull a short ball which was at least 15 yards outside off stump and got caught. Phil, Ted and Pies then contributed decent scores to push the score over the 160 mark which at the time seemed more than a competitive total.
Disaster struck at lunch however as a Caister player unwittingly mentioned the name Turrell in the dressing room. ‘Pies UK’ unfortunately heard the name of his nemesis being spoken and became a complete mental mess. The flash backs and tears came flooding back and wisely Jim decided that it was best for Pies’s health and the team that he would not bowl. Despite being a bowler down Caister started well with Torpedo Tenannt getting a quick wicket. Jim was also bowling ‘well’ rifling the long hops down at close to 55mph which had McAlone diving all over the pitch. If these were Kirkley’s best batsmen surely an easy win was on the cards for Caister. Unfortunately they weren’t and despite their best efforts the Caister bowlers struggled to have any real pace, bounce and accuracy. Kirkley in the end comfortably reached the desired total with around 10 overs and 6 wickets to spare.
Confidence now seems to have reached rock bottom and hopefully the long awaited return of Buffalo ‘roundabout’ Brown will reignite Caister’s fortunes and we can go on a good winning sequence.

Loddon (Home)
Finally after 5 long weeks, ‘it’ finally returned from the midst of nowhere and with it came a much needed win for Caister. We seem a much better team when it returns and if we had it all season we surely would be up there chasing for promotion. What is Caister’s savior you ask? Yes you have guessed it, the SUN had returned! Caister also welcomed back Buffalo Brown from the Sailors grasps.
On a mild sunny day at ‘fortress’ Allendale Road Jim once again won the toss and asked Loddon to bat on a drying greenish pitch. This decision was truly justified as Jim and Buff picked up 4 early wickets for very little runs. Buff particularly bowled well, bowling with good pace and accuracy which resulted in him picking up 3 wickets including the dangerous Nunn. A special mention also must go to Jim who finally managed to bowl not one but two balls on the stumps (the first time ever) both of which by consequence got him a wicket. Loddon struggled to recover from this disastrous start and Rupert and Brains then came onto bowl and like the openers bowled exceptionally well resulting in them clearing up the longish tail. After 32 overs Loddon were all out for a petty 67. Well done bowlers! Surely Caister should knock off this total off without incident!
Mabel and Phil opened the batting and unfortunately disaster struck in the first over as Holmes was bowled by a ‘lollipop’ delivery which bounced over his head onto the stumps. Rupert then came in and didn’t fair any better as he missed a straight one. Oh Dear... Caister were in trouble at 11-2, Loddon’s tails were up as they now thought that a very unlikely win could now be achievable on a very ‘helpful’ pitch.
What Caister needed was their batsmen to be strong and fight through this difficult scenario. Jim joined Mabel to the crease and what was just about to happen few would have believed and I am sure wanted. Mabel batting with fierce grit and determination was somehow adjudged to be leg before wicket when the ball was quite frankly going for a wide. Upon the decision being given suddenly an eerie atmosphere came over Caister playing field, the birds stopped singing, the bee’s stopped buzzing and Pies stopped eating. The sky became completely black and only one could imagine that this must of been the exact same scene when Jesus was crucified as this decision was on a par with that grave injustice. One could only assume that God was making his feelings felt about this diabolical decision just as he did 2,000 years ago. Mabel as the true gentlemen forgave the umpire for this horrific decision and in so the clouds disappeared, the birds began to sing again, the bee’s buzzed and pies gratefully began to eat again and in so the game also continued. KBJ then joined Jim into bat and they batted particularly well to see Caister home to a much deserved and needed victory.
Well done boys, it was a great all round performance. It is hard to see why we are so low in the league when we can play so well like this, hopefully we can take this good performance into the next game and start to move up the table because with the talent we have that is where we should be. Let’s all prey for the sun for next Saturday…
