Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is the title for the next game in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. It will be released for Xbox and PlayStation 2 video game consoles, rather than Nintendo Revolution, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. The reasoning behind the decision to stay on current generation consoles was to wrap up all the current loose ends, and make for a fresh start for the next gen installment.
On October 3, 2005, it was revealed that Midway registered the Internet domain name MKArmageddon.com on September 23, 2005. In addition to breaking the news on the domain name, TRMK added that Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will feature an enhanced and improved fighting engine used in the previous games, as well as an expanded Konquest mode and that the game would remain on current generation consoles to make these improvements possible.
On October 4, 2005, an online chat event was organized by Mortal Kombat Online, known as Fight Night. Ed Boon publically stated that the next Mortal Kombat game "will have a brand spanking new feature that we are very, very excited to announce." Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks producer, Shaun Himmerick, stated at the chat, "while no platforms have been announced yet, but there is plenty of life left in these current systems." According to Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will have more characters than any other Mortal Kombat game, although there was no mentioning of returning or new characters.
On January 12, 2006, a news article containing images scanned from the February 2006, issue #154, of Game Informer was posted at Mortal Kombat Outworld. However, these scanned images have been removed due to copyright ramifications.
Features
60+ characters.
Improved air kombat. Characters will now be able to perform air throws and air combos, as opposed to the one or two hits in previous games.
Directional throwing.
New Deathtraps.
All new Konquest mode that will play similarly to Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, complete with a new character.
Kustom Fatalities - Each character will have around 20 pre-set moves with which to dispatch their opponent, and these can be mixed and matched by the player.
Kreate-a-Fighter - Every detail of the new characters, like appearance and attacks, will be created by the player. (much like the WWE SmackDown! and Soul Calibur III series)
Build your own Fighting Style - You choose which attacks your kreated character will use in their fighting style, then name it!
The Krypt will be replaced by "The Vault", and all of its contents will be unlockable through any play mode.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will sum up everything that happened since the first Mortal Kombat game, presumably ending in the destruction of the Mortal Kombat universe (as per the title). It will be the final decider on who will die or who will live and will end the generation of MK fighters. In a sense, Armageddon is "wiping the slate clean", allowing the series to come back with a fresh start.
This will allow the series to enter the next generation consoles with the next generation of Mortal Kombat fighters. While there is no clear information about who will survive, let alone who will emerge as the winner of this latest battle, Ed Boon has already strongly suggested that such fan favorites like Scorpion and Sub-Zero have a high possibility of returning in future Mortal Kombat games, while the GameInformer article suggested that Kurtis Stryker, an unpopular character, will probably die.
Many fans have thought of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon to be something similar to Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which featured nearly all the characters from the Mortal Kombat universe, and summed up all the trilogy events of Mortal Kombat 1, II, and 3.
It is set to be released October 2, 2006, for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. No Gamecube release information was given yet.
