Cabrillo High Band & Pagentry

Cabrillo Band History

Cabrillo High School was founded in 1965 because there was a need for a second high school in the Lompoc Unified School District. The School is located in the Vandenberg Village, an unincorporated community in the Santa Barbara County. The Village is situated on the beautiful California central coast between the city of Lompoc and the military’s Vandenberg Air Force Base. The School was named after the Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who explored the California coast in the year 1542.

The students were split from Lompoc High School when the school opened. The first band director, Mr. Larry Miller took the helm at the new school and led the band until 1968. The Bands first uniform featured a metallic gold overlay with a Conquistadores helmet.

Taking over the Band in 1969 was Mr. Glen Newcomb. He led the band in a military style through the 1970’s, and 1980’s winning many Parade competitions.

In 1983 Glenn upgraded the drums to include tri-toms and tonal base drums. This was influenced by the Drum and Bugle “Corps Style” Marching Band routines that became popular. The band began competing in “Field Show Competitions”. In 1984 the band changed to a new uniform that Glen designed. The new style featured a Black overlay with cape over a gold silk type long sleeved shirt. In 1989 Glen relinquished command and transferred to the Vandenberg Middle School where he taught many young musicians and as a result the Cabrillo Band began to grow in size as he sent more and more fine musicians to Cabrillo.

Taking over the helm at Cabrillo in 1992 was Mr. Greg Stoll. The band continued to grow and new uniforms were needed. In the mid 90’s the band bought new uniforms exchanging the old Conquistadores helmet for new black felt hats. The uniform now featured a gold cape, and with Spanish style, white frilled front with gold cummerbund. The band continued to compete in field shows and replaced the tri-toms with “quints” and four tonal base drums. In November of 2001, the Band scored high in the first central coast classic field show competition at Arroyo Grande high School. The Band brought home First place in class AA, also winning the “High Music”, “High Visual”, “High Percussion” and “High Auxiliary” trophies. In 2003 the Band won sweepstakes at the Arroyo Grande Show.

Ms Margaret Hutchinson was the band director in 2004 & 2005.

In 2006 Mr.Mike Pakaluk became director of the Cabrillo Marching Conquistadores.
