1. When you go to a breeders home, look for cats, litter trays, bowls and toys, this will indicate that kittens and cats are allowed inside.
2. Always check to see the cleanliness of the breeders home, this will tell you that the breeder is particular about how the cats are looked after .
3. Check the kittens out, make sure they are clean, have nice clear eyes and noses and a nice even coat. If a kitten has runny eyes, nose or a dirty bottom, say 'no thanks.'
4. Ask to see the parents and cattery, it is always good to see how the cats are living, always check the cattery cats out for health. Especially eyes and nose. Are these cats friendly, are they playful?
5. Finally, ask for any guarantees in writing, remember, whatever you have verbally, will most likely not be worth much if it comes to the crunch . An un-healthy kitten can cost large amounts of time, money and especially hearthache.
NEVER BUY A KITTEN FROM A PET SHOP: The kittens are often pedigree looking, but you as the comsumer, dont really know what is behind that kitten. There are no papers, no guarantee's and no background knowledge. These kittens are often well over priced and are not even de-sexed. I have seen kittens that look like Burmese and Tonkinese, they were $495 with one vaccination and a voucher giving you a discount when going to de-sex them. Most kittens from registered breeders are bewteen $350 and $450. These kittens are usually de-sexed and fully vaccinated.
NOTE. A breeder who shows their cats, is usually working to a higher goal. This breeder is spending large amounts of time and money on their cats. They are spending hours working out how to get the best type of kittens possible, how to better the breed, and are usually not ones to take chances on health issues. Proof of showing will be on their web site, or in their home with ribbons.
