Forum of  Burmese  in  Europe (F B E)

-

For Immediate Release: 20. December 2004

* The FBE strongly condemns Thailand PM Thaksin’s recent comments on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s continued detention and calls for an immediate retraction.

* The FBE urges the international governments and parliaments to demand the Burmese military regime to ensure the safety and life of Nobel Peace Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Forum of Burmese in Europe (FBE), representing a network of Burmese people across Europe, unequivocally and strongly condemns the remarks made by the Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra in which he accepted the continued detention of Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as “reasonable enough and convincing”.

Prime Minister Thaksin further supported this view by saying “there was always political violence and turmoil following (the) two or three previous releases of Aung San Suu Kyi.” These comments came on 11 December in his weekly radio address, a day after his half-day visit to Burma, where he held a meeting with the military regime’s leader Than Shwe.

The FBE firmly believes that these Thaksin’s assertions are irresponsible, reckless, unacceptable and gross insult to the people of Burma.

Thailand, under Thaksin administration, has now become the only ‘democracy’ in the world to endorse the imprisonment of a democratically elected leader and Nobel Peace laureate and thus his assertions called into question his democratic credentials and as well the image of the Kingdom of Thailand. Thaksin used to trust the lying words of the sham military junta SPDC solely for his private business interests.

Most of the ASEAN member countries recognise that the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and her participation in a genuine dialogue for national reconciliation is vital for Burma and the stability of the region as a whole.

Last month, after the Burmese military regime arbitrarily extended the house arrest of  Aung San Suu Kyi by a year, some ASEAN member countries including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines have called for her immediate release.

Indonesia has suggested that Burma may not be allowed to host an important regional summit in 2006 unless the SPDC makes substantial progress toward democracy.

In a further development on Tuesday, the Burmese military regime has removed the security of 13 personal bodyguards around Aung San Suu Kyi. Her personal physician is now only allowed to visit her once a week. This has critically compromised her safety and well being. According to the recent statement of the Rangoon NLD on Dec.16 2004, it is said that nobody is taking charge of the security of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD is deeply concerned for her safety and life. Hence the responsibility of safeguarding her life and providing her security and health care needs lies with the authorities. The SPDC is held totally responsible for all incidents that may arise during the uncertain period.

In a statement yesterday, the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, has made clear that he is “seriously concerned” about Aung Suu Kyi’s personal security. The issue of the safety of Aung San Suu Kyi is now extremely important. The failed attempt to assassinate her at Depayin on May 30 2003, where many of her supporters were killed, is now well documented, and responsibility for her security must lie fully with the military regime.

The FBE strongly urges Prime Minister Thaksin to withdraw his assertions. If the Thaksin administration failed to meet the mentioned demands until Dec.31 2004, the FBE in cooperation with the international Burmese democratic network will launch protest actions worldwide against the Thaksin government.

Furthermore, the FBE urges the European Union, the governments of Europe and other concerned nations to demand clarification of the comments made by Prime Minister Thaksin by issuing public statements.

The FBE also requests these same nations, following the example set by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, to demand that personal security for Aung San Suu Kyi be immediately restored by the Burmese military regime and to conduct joint or individual diplomatic demarche to the leaders of the SPDC military regime through the embassies in Rangoon.

The FBE urges the representatives of the ICRC, ILO, UN, EU and the diplomatic corps in Rangoon to monitor closely Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s wellbeing through regular visits.
