To get a hero chao, give a baby chao lots of hero fruits and raise it with hero characters.

To get a dark chao, give a baby chao lots of dark fruits and raise it with dark characters.

Hero and Dark Gardens (Sonic Aventure 2 only) |

To get the hero garden, get a hero chao. When you get a hero chao for the first time, stairs will appear in the chao garden lobby that will lead to the hero garden.
To get the dark garden, get a dark chao. When you get a dark chao for the first time, stairs will appear in the chao garden lobby that will lead to the dark garden.

Duplicate Animals and Chaos Drives |

|
This trick is really hard and takes lots of practice, but once you master it, you can easily get your chao's stats really high.
First, get an animal or chaos drive. Walk up to your chao and drop the animal or chaos drive really close to the chao. If you do it right, the chao will get the extra stats, but the animal will still be usable.

Death and Reincarnation |
|
|
When a chao grows old, (about 5 years old) it will die. If you were very nice to the chao and it loved you, the chao will go into a pink cocoon and turn into an egg. This is reincarnation. Its stats will all be level one, but it will have the same personality, medals, and toys it had in its first life. (Reincarnated chao will no longer have a favorite fruit. It will like them all equally)
If you were mean to the chao and it hated you, it will go into a gray cocoon and dissapear. (It also plays scary music) This is chao death. If this happens, there is nothing you can do to get it back. So be nice to your chao.

Chaos Chao |

|
Chaos chao are very rare and wanted chao. They are not too hard to get, but take a very long time to get. To get a chaos chao, have one of your chao reincarnate twice, and on its third life, while it is still a baby, give it one of every animal and chaos drive. If you want it to be hero, (angel) give it a hero fruit and pet it a lot with hero characters. If you want it to be dark, (devil) give it a dark fruit and pet it a lot with dark characters. If you want it to be neutral, (light) give it a chao fruit and pet it with both hero and dark characters. When the chao goes into a cocoon, it will become an immortal Chaos Chao.

Hero Garden Glitch |

|
In the hero garden, there is a large, white, fallen pillar to the right of the entrance. If you put a chao there, it will be stuck and won't be able to walk.
