Clyde Fixtures 2004/2005

Friendly Dunfermline Athletic 1 v 1 Clyde  13th July 2004  Team: 1 Bell(Trialist) 2 Pinkowski(Trialist) 3 Mensing 4 Greenhill 5 Fotheringham 6 Bryson 7 McCracken 8 Creaney(Trialist) 9 Gilhaney 10 Boyle(Trialist) 11 Welsh(Trialist)  subs: 12 Doyle(2) 14 Ferry(Trialist)(6) 15 McKeever(8) 16 Bradley(10) 17 Balmer GK Halliwell  Clyde Goalscorer: Bryson  MOM: Greenhill                         (below left, goalscorer Craig Bryson, below right, MOM David Greenhill)

A good performance from a Clyde team mixed with trialists and youngsters against a Dunfermline side that fielded almost the same team from the Cup Final. Craig Bryson got Clyde's only goal of the game in 32 minutes. He took advantage of a poor passback and rounded the keeper and put the ball in the back of the net. Right before half time, the Pars were awarded a penalty after Simon Mensing handled the ball. Noel Hunt stepped up but trialist keeper Kevin Bell saved it. Ex St Johnstone man Mark Ferry was brought on at half time and replaced goalscorer Craig Bryson. Striker Kevin Bradley, U17 player John Paul McKeever and Fringe player from last year Paul Doyle were all brought on for John Paul Boyle, Phillip Creaney and David Pinkowski during the course of the second half. Clyde should have wrapped the game up in the 90th minute when good play from Gilhaney sent Greenhill in for a shot but it was saved by Langfield. The Pars were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box in the 94th minute which Dempsey scored.

Friendly Clyde 3 v 3 Macclesfield Town 21st July 2004  Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Fotheringham 4 Balmer 5 Gibson 6 Hudson(Trialist) 7 McCracken 8 Sheridan(Trialist) 9 Arbuckle(Trialist) 10 Bryson 11 Gilhaney  subs: 12 Zujovic(Trialist)(5) 14 Potter(4) 15 Greenhill(8) 16 Bradley 18 Doyle(6) 19 McKeever(10) GK Morrison(1)  Clyde Goalscorers: Fotheringham(pen), Gibson, Arbuckle   MOM: Arbuckle             (below,  goalscorers Gary Arbuckle and Kevin Fotheringham)

Tipton scored for the Silkmen in the second minute. Trialist Arbuckle won a penalty and Kevin Fotheringham converted. Jimmy Gibson gave Clyde the lead with a wonderful freekick. Serbian U21 trialist Goran Zujovic replaced Gibson at half time. Potter and Greenhill replaced Balmer and Sheridan with 10 minutes gone in the second half. Right after that change, Macclesfield scored after Parkin got on the end of a free kick. Doyle replaced Hudson after the goal. Morrison and McKeever replaced Halliwell and Bryson later on and Morrison's first touch of the ball was to pick it out of the back of the net after Morgan headed home. Gary Arbuckle scored Clyde's second equaliser of the night with 5 minutes to go after he rounded the keeper

Friendly Stenhousemuir 0 v 0 Clyde 24th July 2004  Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Doyle 3 Cameron(Trialist) 4 Balmer 5 Potter 6 Zujovic(Trialist) 7 Coburn(Trialist) 8 Gibson 9 Arbuckle(Trialist) 10 Nicholls(Trialist) 11 Glancy(Trialist)  subs: 12 Gilhaney(3) 14 Bryson(5) 15 Fotheringham(14) 16 Greenhill(6) 18 McKeever(7) 19 Pinkowski(Trialist)(10)   (right, John Potter who started his first game since his groin surgery)

Friendly Clyde 3 v 3 Stirling Albion 27th July 2004 Team: 1 Findlay(Trialist) 2 Mensing 3 Fotheringham 4 Greenhill 5 Balmer 6 Pinkowski(Trialist) 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Arbuckle 10 Harty 11 McCracken subs: 12 McKeever 14 Hudson(Trialist)(6) 15 Gilhaney(10) 16 Doyle(5) 18 Glancy(Trialist)(4) 19 Potter(11) GK Morrison  Clyde Goalscorers: Harty, Bryson, Glancy  MOM: Mensing   (right, goalscorer Ian Harty)

Scott McLean opened the scoring for the visitors, when his shot from outside the box gave trialist Scott Findlay no chance. Ex Clyde man John Fraser made it two nil for Albion. Graeme McCracken and Dvid Greenhill were withdrawn on the half hour mark, being replaced John Potter and Martin Glancy. Clyde pulled a goal back when Ian Harty scored a simple tap in. Clyde then equalised when Gary Arbuckle squared a ball to Craig Bryson, who slotted hom and got his second pre-season goal. Gary Arbuckle himself should have put Clyde in front but his finish was awful. Clyde then made a triple substitution after the break, with Gilhaney, Doyle and Hudson, coming on for Balmer, Harty and Pinkowski. Clyde then gave away a penalty, which Scott McLean cooly put away. Martin Glancy then scored a supberb overhead kick to earn a draw.

Friendly Livingston 3 v 0 Clyde 31st July 2004 Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Fotheringham 4 Balmer 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Glancy(Trialist) 11 Welsh(Trialist) subs: 12 Gilhaney(7) 14 Bell(Trialist)(6) 15 Harty(9) 16 Arbuckle(10) 18 Doyle(11) GK Morrison

1st Division Clyde 2 v 1 Partick Thistle 7th August 2004 Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Balmer 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Arbuckle 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Fotheringham 11 Harty subs: 12 Doyle 14 Greenhill 15 Gilhaney(9) 16 McCracken GK Morrison  Clyde Goalscorers: Harty, Gibson  Sent off: Gibson(2Y)  MOM: Gibson     (left, debutant player coach Gary Bollan, right, goalscorer and MOM Jimmy Gibson)

An exciting game to start the season off with, against our old rivals. 5 players were making their league debut under new manager Billy Reid. Ex Clyde man Jamie Mitchell could have had Thistle 5 goals up in the opening 20 minutes but missed all his chances. On 27 minutes, Darren Sheridan chipped the ball into the box and Harty was there. He seemed to take ages to figure out where he was putting the ball, but he managed to get it in the back of the net. Thistle players were moaning against offside. Clyde scored a second just before half time. Another ex-Clyde man in the Thislte team, Leigh Hinds took a shocking corner to the half way line where Aron Wilford went on a run with the ball. He then gave the ball to Ian Harty, who crossed to Gibson in the box to make it two nil to the Bully Wee. Bryn Halliwell pulled off a couple of magnificent saves after half time. Thistle defender Andy Dowie then recieved a sending off. He was booked for dissent, but kept on complaining and was shown a second yellow then a red. Thistle brought giant Armand One on but despite his height, he was absoloute garbage, sometimes blasting ball out of the stadium. New captain John Potter then gifted Thistle a goal with ten minutes to go. He seemed to step on the ball and Jaun Escales rounded Bryn Halliwell to make it two one. Jimmy Gibson recieved a second yellow and that meant he was off. Both sides down to ten men for the closing five minutes. Sub Mark Gilhaney could have wrapped the game up in stoppage time but his weak lob failed to beat Kenny Arthur. Armand One had a chance with the last kick of the ball but surprise, surprise he blasted it over the bar and out of the stadium.....again. Lets all laugh at Thistle hahaha, Lets all laugh at Thistle

1st Division Raith Rovers 2 v 3 Clyde 14th August 2004 Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Bryson 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Arbuckle 8 Gilhaney 9 Wilford 10 Fotheringham 11 Harty subs: 12 Doyle(9) 14 Greenhill(7) 15 McCracken 16 Bradley GK Morrison Clyde Goalscorers: Bryson, Harty(pen), Potter  MOM: Bryson (below, goalscorers John Potter, Ian Harty and Craig Bryson)

Billy Reid made two changes to last weeks team when he brought Craig Bryson and Mark Gilhaney in for the injured Stuart Balmer and suspended Jimmy Gibson. Bryson got off to a dream start on his debut when he scored in the fourth minute. Mark Gilhaney had his shirt pulled inside the box just before half time. The ref gave a penalty and Ian Harty stepped up and got his second goal of the season. Captain John Potter made it three nil fifteen minutes after half time when his deflected shot bet Pousounammy in goals. Clyde switched off and Raith pulled one back from Hamed Sacko with ten minutes to go. Raith had all the possesion and chances now and got a second when John Potter scored an own goal. Raith mae an unsporting like gesture in stoppage time when sub Paul Doyle kicked the ball out because a Raith man was down and Raith never returned the ball from the throw in. Clyde held on for the win

1st Division Clyde 1 v 0 Ross County 21st August 2004 Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Kerkar 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Fotheringham 11 Harty subs: 12 Arbuckle(11) 14 Gilhaney(9) 15 Walker(4) 16 Doyle GK Morrison Clyde Goalscorer: Wilford  MOM: Kerkar (below, Karim Kerkar and Kevin Fotheringham, who made his last appearance for Clyde)

Jimmy Gibson returned to the strating line up aftre his suspension. Algerian internationalist Karim Kerkar also made his debut. Gary Arbuck and Mark Gilhaney dropped out from last weeks starting XI. Kerkar was leaving defenders behind with his darting runs. Craig Bryson could have put Clyde in front but his shot was blocked by the County defender. Darren Sheridan also could have given us the lead but his shot from outside the box cannoned of the crossbar. Aron Wilford gave Clyde the lead 11 minutes after the interval when Karim Kerkar made the goal out of nothing. Kerkar passed the ball from the byline and Wilford scored one of the easist goals in his career. Ross County never looked like making a comeback. Alex Walker made his debut when he came on for Karim Kerkar with 10 minutes to go.

CIS Insurance League Cup 2nd Round Airdrie United 0 v 1 Clyde 25th August 2004  Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Walker 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Kerkar 11 Harty subs: 12 Arbuckle(4) 14 Gilhaney(11) 15 Greenhill 16 Doyle(7) GK Morrison Clyde Goalscorer: Wilford  MOM: Wilford (to the right is Alex Walker, who made his starting debut and goalscorer Aron Wilford)

Only one change was made to the team who played on Saturday, with Alex Walker replacing the departed Kevin Fotheringham. United set their stall out early and obviously were aware of little Algerian Kerkar as they decided the way to stop Clyde playing was to stop Kerkar
The old tactic of "if you can't stop him by fair means then just stop him by foul" was in evidence. And with little more than fifteen minutes gone, a horrendous two-footed lunge by Mark Roberts on Kerkar saw the ex-Falkirk man become the first player to have his name taken. Kerkar was leaving the Airdrie defence in muddles with his run's. The first half came to life just on the twenty-inute mark when John Potter had his ankles kicked from behind by Steven McKeown, as the Clyde defender tried to usher the ball out for a goal kick. The referee quite rightly showed the Airdrie United winger a straight red card for his foolish show of petulance. The second half provided more of the same as the home side sat in even deeper than in the first half, but Clyde, well in cotrol, were finding it difficult to find any space in forward areas. Gibson and Kerkar saw shots sail off target but on the hour mark a stunning diagonal pass saw Walker in acres of space on the left but the ex-Rangers man just failed to control the ball and it ran out of play. Walker was replaced by Arbuckle a few minutes later.  Kerkar broke into the box but his off-target shot broke to Wilford who was left with the simple task of prodding home into an empty net. Two minutes after the goal, Christie was booked by the referee for a horrific stamp on Harty. It happened right in front of the ref and was worse than the first sending off. Harty had to be given stitches in a face wound after the game. With eleven minutes left, Harty was replaced by Gilhaney as another booking for the striker would have meant the red card and a suspension the club could well do without. The last threat Clyde offered of increasing the lead came when Kerkar burst down the left, beating half a dozen players, but his shot was tame and easily held by the keeper.

1st Division Queen of the South 0 v 1 Clyde 28th August 2004 Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Walker 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Kerkar 11 Harty subs: 12 Arbuckle(9) 14 Gilhaney(4) 15 Conway(10) 16 Doyle GK Morrison Clyde Goalscorer: Harty  MOM: Sheridan (below is Aaron Conway, who made his debut)

Clyde began this game full of confidence with the midfield knocking the ball around confidently and picking up a lot of the 50-50 balls. It took only five minutes for Harty to be put in the clear but his angled shot from in the box hit the keeper's legs and spun behind for a corner. Kerkar whipped the ball into the near post and after a melee the ball was cleared. Although Clyde were carving open the opposition the shooting from distance was very poor. Kerkar had a good attempt with a free kick put it drifted just wide. That was to be his last involvement as after fifteen minutes he hobbled off to be replaced by new boy Aaron Conway. Conway was quickly involved and helped to set up Clyde's goal after twenty minutes. Wilford was put clear down the right and drove into the box. He dinked the ball up to the far post where Conway met it with a powerful header. Queens scrambled it off the line but Harty managed to get the ball over the line via a post. McNiven had a powerful shot for Queens that Halliwell did well to turn around the post and later the chunky centre forward headed over from a few yards out. Clyde almost grabbed a second but Bryson's header was brilliantly scooped over the bar by the keeper. Walker also had a great run down the middle. After beating three players he found himself in the box with only the keeper to beat. We can only assume he doesn't trust his left foot as he tried to square the ball and the chance was lost. As expected Queens pushed on in the second half as Clyde gradually fell deeper and deeper into their own half. Halliwell tipped a screamer from left-back, English, over the bar and later performed an astounding reflex save to prevent McNiven's volley from inside the box finding the net. Walker then mysteriously pulled up in agony and was stretchered off in the sixty-first minute. Arbuckle came on and straight away charged down the middle only to see his net-bound shot tipped around the post. Gilhaney replaced Wilford in the seventy-fifth minute as Clyde tried to see the game out safely and the former showed his experience by running down the clock in the corner. The final whistle came as a great relief and Clyde can sit very pleased with the 100% record so far.

Bells Challenge Cup 2nd Round Clyde 1 v 0 Stanraer 31st August 2004 Team: 1 Morrison 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Wilson 5 Potter 6 McCracken 7 Bryson 8 Arbuckle 9 Conway 10 Valois 11 Gilhaney subs: 12 McKeever(3) 14 Bradley(10) 15 Flaherty 16 Harris GK Halliwell Clyde Goalscorer: Valois  MOM: Morrison (below, golascorer Jean Louis Valois,U19 player Graeme McCracken, who made his debut and MOM, keeper Alan Morrison)

Clyde fielded a team mixed with experience and youth tonight. Alan Morrison and Graeme McCracken both started for the first time this season. Scott Wilson, Aaron Conway and Jean Louis Valois both made their starting debuts. Stranraer had a few chances in the first half but none really troubled Morrison. Clyde's only decent chance in the first half came from Craig Bryson. His shot went just over the bar. Into the second half and Conway's cross picked out Bryson but he missed with his header. Alan Morrison made a fabulous reflex save after a shot from the Stranraer striker. Jean Louis Valois scored a cracker of a goal well outside the box with his left foot. Kevin Bradley and John Paul McKeever came off the bench to make their debuts in the last ten minutes replacing Valois and Gary Bollan respectively.

1st Division Clyde 0 v 0 St Mirren 4th September 2004  Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Malone 4 Wilson 5 Potter 6 Sheridan 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Conway 11 Harty subs: 12 Gilhaney(4) 14 Arbuckle(7) 15 Bradley(10) 16 McKeever GK Morrison  MOM: Sheridan (below, MOM Darren Sheridan and Scott Wilson)

It took 40 minutes for Clyde to get a chance, when Aaron Conway had a shot from outside the box saved by Craig Hinchcliffe. Gary Arbuckle replaced the injured Craig Bryson at half time. John O'Neil could have put St Mirren 1-0 up if it had not been for Bryn Halliwell. Clyde suffered another blow when Scott Wilson went off with an injury, and Mark Gilhaney came on. Aaron Conway tested Hinchcliffe again, but the shot was easily saved. Clyde should have had a penalty when Mark Gilhaney was pushed in the box, but nothing was given.

1st Division Clyde 1 v 2 Airdrie United 11th September 2004  Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Bollan 4 Wilson 5 Potter 6 Walker 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Gilhaney 11 Harty subs: 12 Arbuckle(6) 14 Conway(9) 15 Balmer 16 Bradley(11) GK Morrison  Clyde Goalscorer: Wilford  MOM: Gilhaney

With Billy Reid as Manager of the Month and Airdrie's injury woes there was a giant banana skin looming and Clyde still couldn't avoid it. Airdrie began brightly and Clyde struggled for possession. Airdrie were putting themselves about but quickly went a step too far. Malone and Roberts were having a dispute about the taking of a free kick that ended with Roberts aiming a kick at the nether regions of Malone. As this happened right in front of the referee he had little choice but to produce a red card. Clyde took advantage and Gilhaney was running at the defence in a confident manner that we haven't seen for a while. It was from one of his runs and crosses that Wilford placed his header over the Airdrie keeper and into the net. Clyde also had a couple of close things from corners and the Airdrie keeper pulled off a dramatic stop to deny Gilhaney while Bryson blazed over with the follow up. At this stage all seemed well for Clyde but with five minutes of the half remaining the banana skin appeared and Clyde just couldn't avoid it. A fierce shot from the edge of the box came back off Halliwell's chest and a gleeful Barkley stroked in the equaliser. A draw seemed likely but then Clyde made another mistake Coyle pounced as he has done for over twenty years. In the swirling wind an Airdrie corner was only knocked back towards their own goal by the Clyde defence and Coyle's deft flick was enough to find the corner of the net. Clyde had plenty of the ball but only a Bryson shot that skimmed the bar threatened to change the outcome. Arbuckle, Conway and Bradley were all introduced for Walker, Wilford and Harty but they made little difference as Airdrie's spirit saw them home.

Bells Cup 3rd Round  Clyde 1 v 2 Forfar Athletic 14th September 2004  Team: 1 Halliwell 2 Mensing 3 Wilson 4 Balmer 5 Potter 6 Walker 7 Bryson 8 Gibson 9 Wilford 10 Gilhaney 11 Harty subs: 12 Arbuckle(4) 14 Conway(7) 15 Bradley 16 McCracken GK Morrison  Clyde Goalscorer: Harty    MOM: Gilhaney

Clyde deservedly went ahead after nine minutes thanks to an Ian Harty strike but Forfar gradually got on top and were well worth their thirty-fourth minute equaliser from Paul Tosh, as Clyde repeatedly gave away possession. In the fifty-sixth minute Forfar lost 'keeper Michael Brown with a shoulder injury when he fell awkwardly following a clash with Aron Wilford and Clyde nearly took advantage of  substitute goalkeeper Neal Ferrie's settling in period when Ian Harty struck a post. With eighteen minutes left of the second half, Bryn Halliwell brilliantly saved a penalty after a challenge in the box earned Simon Mensing a second bookable offence. From the resultant corner, Forfar scored against the, by then, ten-man Clyde when David McClune drove the ball through a crowded goalmouth from eighteen yards into the net. During the last quarter of an hour, the visitors continued to look the more likely to score but the game finished 2-1, thus ending Clyde's involvement in the Bell's Cup for another year.
