Brynler Birmans and Beagles

lovingly bred and raised

We all remember the days of our cats being given the freedom to roam our property (and that of many neighbours) but, fortunately, these days the majority of pet owners are taking more responsibility for their furkids and confining them to their home and yard; it is much safer for the cat as there are so many dangers out in the big wide world - dogs, stray cats (which often carry disease) cars, people ..the list goes on.   I am sure we have all had experience of having a beloved pet killed on the road and it is not something I nor the major of responsible pet owners ever wish to experience again.

Roaming cats also cause distruction of native wildlife, create havoc at other people's homes and frankly (though it's hard to believe) not everyone out there is a cat lover.

We wouldn't let our children run wild so why our cats??   They can live very happily, healthily  (and for a much longer life) as indoor cats but to have the best of both worlds why not look at an enclosure where they can experience the great outdoors, feel the wind in their fur and the sun on their whiskers.

That was the plan when we created 'The Pussery' which is actually a cedar room built off the end of our house (with a cat flap for free access); the building is functional by itself with ramps, perches and climbing things and it is loved by them all.

However, like all bright ideas, this one continued to grow (thank doG for a handy hubby!) and the Outdoor Entertainment Area was born.

this gives the felines a full outdoor experience; they can be rained upon, sit on logs, climb ramps or just sit and watch the birds go by.  This area is accessed through The Pussery and can be closed if required.

Currently, to fit in with our future plans, the 'Cat Mahal' is in progress and, as the name suggests, this truly is a work of art with pens, outdoor runs and  all mod. cons - watch this space for further developments!

Not all enclosures need to be huge, expensive constructions - why not think about enclosing a section down the side of your house with shadecloth or the like?  A converted aviary or outgrown kid's cubby house can be put to new use to give your cats an outdoor experience or many others have used fence capping to enclose their yards..the cat can wander on it's own property but cannot get out over the fences.

The following two photos are from Berrick Birmans and give further examples of what is possible with a bit of thought and effort. (good job Marina and Tanya)

it's better to be inside and fat than outside and flat!
