MY JUDGING CRITIQUES & PHOTOS

SOUTHERN COUNTIES CANINE ASSOCIATION

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

This was a Bittersweet appointment for me as it was the result of our original appointed Judge Mr Tag Knight withdrawing due to ill health, from myself & all the Border terrier world we wish you a very speedy return to good health.

I was honoured to be the appointed judge and I would like to thank the club for the invitation & commend them for their efforts to find a Breed Judge at such short notice, no easy task for any Secretary these days as im sure I & the exhibitors will agree
A Big thank you to my travelling companion & navigator who dropped everything in the proverbial final hour (or should I say minute) and getting me organised for the Trip. With me undertaking a house move & a Championship judging appointment in the same week, to say the least you were very much appreciated, also thanks to my ring stewards
As always when judging our beloved breed we are required to find the dog that is capable of doing a days work in the field “Essentially a Working Terrier”
Much has been commented on size of the breed and the standard does say “Not too heavy in bone” but I now feel that maybe we are losing the bone, size & substance on some of our pups & younger entry, just remember it its all fine & good that the dog gets to Ground to its quarry but it must also be able to have the strength & power to face its quarry. With weak under jaws, small teeth & fine bone some of these light weight exhibits as many Terrier men will tell you, may have the Courage & Tenacity the breed is noted for, but faced with its quarry would spend more of the time being nursed at home. Please lets not lose the “Border” in Border Terrier & go the way of many of the other Terrier breeds & end up with just  “Terrier”  i.e.; Smart, over trimmed short backed & Showy.
I was pleased with my class winners throughout the day & delighted with my Dog & Bitch line up for the Challenge. Overall the quality of the entry was very good and a lot of my decisions were very close ones, making my final choices particularly difficult.
I thank all the exhibitors for making it an enjoyable day and taking my decisions sportingly.

Thank you to the Officers and Committee for the lovely warm welcome and super lunch shared with Mrs Peggy Grayson who as always was a delight and kept us all enthralled with her wonderful canine tales. Also thanks to the exhibitors for my nice entry and my steward of the day.
General comments were that the dogs were all of correct temperament but some could benefit from some more Ringcraft to show themselves off to best advantage.
Also when picking the dogs up to judge weight and span i found a number of them tensing up (almost as if picking them up was unfamiliar to them!!! ) so much so that it could have given the wrong impression of weight and span. So it is very important to handle your pups and youngsters this way to allow the dog to relax when handled, both in the field and ring. On the plus side Good to see from my critique that I have praised a number for correct shoulders and narrow bodies so critical in an earth dog, needless to say a breed point to continue to strive for.
Once again i thank you all for the honour of going over your dogs; i had a most enjoyable day.

My first time awarding CC's in the breed, can I first thank the exhibitors for a lovely entry, also my two most efficient stewards Mr W & Mrs V Gillot, who made the day so pleasant & enjoyable with their professional & unobtrusive manner. You made the day one too remember.

On the downside I was concerned to find a few exhibits with incorrect bites, we must really watch this trait as it so easy to lose the strong scissor bite so synonymous with our breed, narrow jaws & large teeth don’t make for a good combination, be mindful of this when breeding. Also disappointed to see the continuing Trend of showing Borders without the correct double jacket ...is this a trend or one wonders can these exhibits ever grow the correct jacket so essential to the working terrier, again a breed  point we must be very careful not too overlook.

On a positive note, temperaments were excellent in one of the Hottest Julys to date.

Also Size & Span were more typical than of the past.

Congratulations to my BOB winner for making the shortlist in the Group once again you did the Breed proud.

I was looking for a correct sized Tweedy Border who came to hand well, with the requisite Ottery Head  who was shown in correct double jacket & thick pliable pelt, providing them the protection needed of a working dog & the muscle tone & fitness too enable them to cope with a day in the field.

I was really thrilled with my Top winners; Borders who I felt fitted this criteria with ease.
