What is self-rule/volkstat?

Have there ever been similar movements?

Prominent examples of volkstaats are:

Wales is known in its aboriginal tongue as Cymru. A people once hiding their roots to please England, the Welsh now are full of pride. 20 years ago, their language was near extent, now it is found on street signs alongside the Britannic lingua franca of English. www.plaidcymru.gov.uk

Quebec and Nunavut are prime examples. The French Canadian people are proud of their culture and keen to preserve traditions. Their Quebec state provides for such, even resulting in them having there own legal system separate to the rest of Canada and based on the Code of Napoleon. As for the Intuits of Nunavut (meaning: my land), they gained their wish for self-rule when a stretch of sparsely inhabited land was handed to the control of their chiefs. www.nunavut.com

Israel was formed when oppressed Jews moved to Palestine and along with native Jews formed a nation-state. Though it has been held in question for wars with Arabs and its borders of issue, the actual idea in itself of Jews forming their own state is great.

Northern Ireland is an example of a nation-state protected. The people are mostly British and therefore wish to maintain a link to the UK, a connection the Britannic government has kept open at great expense.

Poland was a state in the former Soviet Union empire, where its culture was overrun with communist ways. A poor country, it has made great leaps towards First World status. In the late 1980s the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) resulted in self-determination for many groups within the former Russian empire.

The American War of Independence culminated in the Definitive Treaty of Peace (1783) in which Great Britain recognized American independence.
