What is self-rule/volkstat?	What is a nation-state? What is self-determination? Nation-state formation requires recognition of a territory that one nation mostly inhabits and the establishment of a government to administer that territory. The nation possesses an ethnic identity, frequently united by a common language, history, culture, and religion. Self-determination is the supposed right and practice of a people to achieve self-government, closely related to the concepts of nationalism and the nation-state. People in an area where their nation forms a majority of the population set-up their own government, which will end up consisting mostly of their ethnic group and thus have their interests at heart. What movements for self-rule are there in South Africa today? Volkstaat is the Afrikaans (a native language of Africa spoken by Dutch and German descendants) for nation-state. The volkstaat the word has become most associated with is the Afrikaner ethnic group that is frustrated with the government and wants independence. Such movements have also arisen among Zulu and British Africans. The most well-known independence party was the former Inkatha Freedom Party as it was then. The most prominent Afrikaner party is the Vryheidsfront Plus, though Bowerboruering and FAD have had influence. BAFL is determined that British and Afrikaner Africans will each gain self-rule through nation-states. How about the moral of self-rule? This depends on the volkstaat in question. Factors to be considered are the location, the people within and the governmental structure. However, the idea of a volkstaat can’t just be shunned as fascism. Nation-states (volkstaats) exist throughout the world; in fact both the UK and EU are a collaboration of such countries. Such states also exist to some extent in Asia. The majority of such states are respected, so a possible volkstaat could be.
