What is self-rule/volkstat?	What is Orania? Some Vryheids Front Plus members believe it is hopeless waiting for the South African government to grant independence, and want action now. The 600-strong population of the district of Orania, in the Northern Cape province, courageously declared semi-independence to South Africa in the mid-1990s. All Afrikaners are welcome to apply for residency, but other nationalities, whether white or black, may visit but not stay. Orania has its own currency, the Ora, and there are brave plans for more of such towns. Orania is viewed by the South African government as a crazy attempt by die-hard racists to keep apartheid alive, but in reality it is a Bantustan for the Afrikaners, it is them whom it is restricting. It hasn’t done anything to harm blacks, and it is incorrect to call it the ‘white-only’ town. It is simply one large closed community. Visit www.orania.org.za
