Beatrice and Benedick are two of the central characters in the William Shakespeare's comedy
Much Ado About Nothing. In
Much Ado About Nothing, Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon; Claudio and his new bride-to-be Hero, who is Beatrice's cousin; Leonato, Hero's father and Beatrice's uncle; and other characters plot to bring Beatrice and Benedick together. These two characters carry on a continuous banter with each other, so much so that Leonato remarks, "they never meet / but there's a skirmish of wit between them" (I:i, 50-51). Both have sworn off marriage, although Beatrice tells the prince they have dated before, and the plotters vow to bring them together. After Hero and Claudio's wedding is broken up with false accusations against Hero, planted in Claudio's mind by Don John, Don Pedro's illegitamate half-brother, Benedick and Beatrice swear their love for each other. After Don John's evil plot is discovered and mended, Benedick and Beatrice discover that they have been tricked into loving each other, but plan to marry anyway. The final scenes ends with a dance.
