***The Marigolds***

Here’s another Qiong Yao novel adaptation that starred Brigitte as the main character. Brigitte lived with her father, who is retired, and her mother, who is a mentally unstable woman. Her brother suffered from bone cancer and an operation was encouraged (but not 100% guaranteed) by the doctors to treat his cancer. Brigitte happened to be the person to sign the permission form for the operation to take place. Unfortunately, the operation failed. Her brother died of the cancer afterward and her mother also became crazy. She blames his death on Brigitte, scolds and slaps the girl around once in a while whenever a wave of madness hits her.

Brigitte had a good female friend and her friend's brother (Ma Yong Lin) is very nice and caring to her (in a brother-sister way). One time when her mother caused her to injure her arm, Ma did not not mind leaving his motorcycle on the street to take her to the hospital, and he did end up having his motorcycle stolen. Brigitte was also the person whom Ma confined everything to and asked for advice whenever he ran into a dilemma.

Brigitte is a teacher and she does private tutoring for the daughter of a famous lawyer (played by Chin Han). Chin’s daughter has a very strong passion for plants and flowers. Their house garden is filled with blossoming flowers, of which among them are the marigolds (hence the title of the movie). Through the course of teaching this little girl, Brigitte found out she is under way too much pressure that resulted from her father's expection in regards to her performance on college entrance exams. Slowly, Brigitte helped Chin to understand his daughter more and brought them closer to each other.

The first moment when Chin met Brigitte at his house, he was already captivated by her strong will and determination, which he later learned she managed to harvest from all the hardships in her life. As time passed, the two of them began to develop feelings for each other, despite of their age gap.

Problems began to arise when Chin became jealous of Brigitte's ex-fiance, while Brigitte was also taken to Chin’s ex-wife’s mansion and had to endure a bitter speech from the bitter woman. Their romance almost shattered at one point as a result.

But alas, true love conquered it all. Chin and Brigitte were seen happily together in the final scene, hand in hand and heart in heart, strolling in their little romantic garden of marigolds (and as is the case for most of these Brigitte/Chin Han romance movies, I once again lost count of how many times they kissed in here ^-^).

The movie also has a subplot in regards to the love story of Chin's daughter and Ma Yong Lin. Brigitte had her shares in helping these two get together in the end.

Another wonderful performance from our leading lady. It is very common for Qiong Yao movies to have a handful of hardships occurring to the main heroine, and Brigitte’s frailness + her mournful eyes just suit her so well in these types of character. The scene at the telephone booth when Chin Han accused her of going back to her ex-fiance especially rips my heart. Chin Han plays a middle-age man and has mustache in here. =0 He acted out his jealousy very well. Their pairing is simply flawless once more.
