In February 2003, Peter & Georgia (us) set off for 12 months to teach conversational English in China. We were a young couple (ages 33 and 26) who wanted to experience the culture and challenges of living in a different country. The school we taught at was called the Jiangsu Yangzhong Senior Middle School and was located in Jiangsu Province, in Yangzhong City. The city is located on the second largest island on the Yangtze River.
The city was approximately 200km north west of Shanghai and 100 km east of Nanjing.

We arrived at the school on 20 February 2003 and started teaching on Monday 24 February 2003. We returned home to Australia on 2 February 2004 after a fantastic 12 month experience. This website is to provide additional photographs and information about our adventure.

Are you between 20 and 60 years of age (or thereabout), speak English (or another European language such as French, German or Spanish), in good strong health and want to have an experience of a lifetime, you could well be qualified to teach in China.
If you are interested in teaching, send us an email and we can forward you the contact details of the agency we used to find our teaching positions. Unlike many other agencies, this agency does not charge any fees (it does not cost you anything). We can also send you information about the current salary range for teachers, standard employment conditions and how to apply for a teaching position.
phbriggs2000@yahoo.com.au If
you would like to work at the Jiangsu Yangzhong Senior Middle School,
you can contact the school directly to see if they have any teaching
positions available. Send Patrick an email (sygz_fyl@163.com). Just say that you got the school's details from Peter & Georgia. |
FAQ: Yes, it is possible to have a great time in China on the base salary paid by the school, and still save money. The two of us were able to save about 30% of our gross income, and the only extra work we did was two short summer schools and about 6 hours overtime at the school. We know of teachers who sought additional external employment (approved by their school) and were able to save heaps more than we did. Living in China is very cheap, and your weekly salary will go a long way. This is particularly the case as the school will pay for your accommodation, electricity, gas, heating/cooling costs, return airfare and much, much more.
