The Bric a Brac Shop was opened in April, 1988. The property was first rented from the original landlords in 1987. Repairs and alterations were needed before it could be used as a shop.
It is was next to the Maltings, an early Nineteenth Century building, designed to be part of The Alnwick Brewery. We were on the opposite side of the road, from Morrisons supermarket.
It opened at 11 a.m. and closed at 5 p.m. We were closed on Mondays in the winter. We never opened on a Sunday. We opened on Bank Holidays.
On Saturday, February 11th 2006, a lady in the shop reported hearing a buzzing noise outside. Then there were people shouting. A large flame was seen rising from the roof of Tagish Ltd., a computer company located next door. The roof of the building next door was completely burnt off. A large fence is in front of the shop and customers and others are not allowed access to the shop. Access was also prevented to Mill Studios, Tagish was completely destroyed, Border Cordage was seriously damaged. The Landlord lost a large amount of expensive furniture stored in the area that had been the New Life Church.
The development is called the Malthouse.

I have added this comment from a local Blog:-
"Surely work on the Malthouse Development in Dispensary Street, Alnwick has stopped, leaving the blocks of apartments half completed, same as the other building developments nearby where no building work has started, leaving large areas of cleared ground.
Surely there is no body moving into the empty Woolworth store in Alnwick, because the TO LET sign is still on the building. If the store had been let the sign would have been removed."

Newspaper comment.

It used to be so easy. Buy a property, rent it out (or perhaps don't even bother) and then within a year or so you sell up, sit back and enjoy the profit. Those days are over. The downturn has wiped 30 per cent off values. “The market has a long way to fall and the recession has a long way to run. Putting money into an illiquid asset such as property could seriously damage your financial wealth.”

Old Photos of Alnwick

Fri, 20 Jun 2008 14:40:02 +0000 (GMT)

Hello
Thank you so much for sharing the old pictures of Alnwick - lovely.  My husband's family came from Alnwick in the  early1800s, and when I research any tree I love to find old pictures of where the family were living.
Again thanks, Jean

The door on the front is now a fake.

Newspaper comment.

Putting money into an illiquid asset such as property could seriously damage your financial wealth.” "

"The Sunday Telegraph Money section first revealed the plight of new builds two years ago. We told the story of a Barratt development in Britain's oldest recorded town, Colchester, and how many properties had been repossessed and were under the hammer at knock-down prices. The flats at Henry Laver Court which sold, with incentives, for between £224,995 and £249,995, had reoof of Tagish Ltd., a computer company located on the top floor. The roof of this building was completely burnt off. Access was prevented to Mill Studios, Tagish was completely destroyed, Border Cordage was seriously damaged. The Landlord lost a large amount of expensive furniture stored in the area that had been the New Life Church. Second hand books had been sold from a cottage on the front since 1987.
