::: CREATED BY PETER CHUNG :::
::: FEATURING VOICES OF JOHN RAFTER LEE & DENISE POIRIER :::

The animation was presented in a particularly oddball format with a surreal, dreamy feel to it.  It didn’t follow a specific plot – it was extremely non-linear and made no use of dialogue.  However, as the episodes got longer, the story became clearer and dialogue was introduced, but it still maintained the surreal quality it was famous for.

The show first aired on MTV’s Liquid Television in 1991 with 6 short episodes.  The second season followed in 1992 with 5 short episodes.  In 1995 the third and final season aired with 10 half-hour episodes.

The story centres on a scantily-clad Aeon who is an ambiguous assassin with ever-changing motives.  She is part of a rebellious group called The Monicans whose goals always include kicking Breen ass.  The leader of Bregna, Trevor Goodchild, is both Aeon’s enemy and lover.  Aeon undertakes countless bizarre missions never knowing where they will take her.  The plot isn’t always clear and the show is very stylized.  This is a world where anything is possible – where licking feet, trapping flies in your eyelashes, exchanging tablets through kissing and having extreme body modifications is normal.

::: INFO :::

The game ends at the year the movie picks up – it bridges the gap between the animated series and the live-action film.

In the game you’ll assume the role of Aeon Flux, a very skillful and acrobatic assassin.  You’ll then be assigned missions which you will have to complete in order to complete the game.  The game is spread out over 7 very different episodes taking place in different years in the future.

During gameplay you’ll need to make use of various maneuvers and a range of futuristic weapons.  In addition to the commonly seen health meter, there is also a style meter.  The style meter gradually fills up as you perform complex moves.  Once the style meter is filled to a certain point, you can execute special combination attacks.

::: REVIEW :::
(Contains a spoiler!)

Graeme Revell’s music for Aeon Flux is mesmerizing and sets a very effective atmosphere of struggle and power.  It is very catchy and is at its strongest in scenes like the narration for the film (Bregna 2415), the frontier garden crossing (
Torture Garden), the entering into the Central Surveillance Facility (The Panopticon), the major shootout scenes (Oren Goodchild Dies) and the finale of the film (Aeon Flux).  The music can get a little repetitive in spots, but it doesn’t last long enough for it to be annoying.

All the music from Aeon Flux is included in the soundtrack, and in the order of which it appears in the film.

The music loops through a rollercoaster of moods:  power, sadness, frustration, anxiety etc. – it captures the emotions of every scene effectively and creates a very realistic atmosphere in the film.

::: REVIEW :::

(Contains spoilers!)

The expanded score for Ćon Flux offers a few additional tracks to the original score and some of the original track titles have been given new titles.

The new titles for original tracks are ‘Opening Titles’ (Bregna 2415), ‘The Mission’ (The Panopticon), ‘Family Dead’ (Una Flux), ‘Lethal Garden’ (Torture Garden), ‘Goodchild Central’ (Monican Mission), ‘The Message’ (The Kiss), ‘The Relical’ (The Relical and Keeper), ‘Grenade’ (Grenade! Monorail Chase), ‘You Were My Wife’ (I Remember), ‘Capture’ (The Cherry Orchard), ‘Oren Dies’ (Oren Goodchild Dies), ‘Destroy the Relical’ (Destroying the Memories), ‘Epilog’ (Aeon Flux).

The original track titles that remain unchanged are ‘Good Boys’ and ‘Cloning Discovery’.

New tracks on offer are ‘Meeting Trevor’, ‘Oren Conspiracy’, ‘Clone Dreams’, ‘Flashback’, ‘Space Shifting’, ‘Escape’, ‘Chairman Oren’.

2 tracks which are shorter in length are ‘The Relical’ and ‘Oren Dies’.

The ‘ĆON FLUX: Expanded Motion Picture Score’ is a worthwhile purchase if you do not already have the original motion picture soundtrack.  For those who purchased the original soundtrack, you may not find it worth your while to purchase this soundtrack for the additional tracks as some of the newer tracks have a similar sound to existing tracks.  ‘Flashback’, ‘Space Shifting’ and ‘Escape’ are the better tracks among the newer tracks on offering.

I’d recommend this to those who have not yet purchased the original motion picture soundtrack and to hardcore fans.

::: INFO :::

The four-issue miniseries of Aeon Flux comic books lay the foundation for events in the film.  Here is a sneak peek at each of the four comic books: (Click on the thumbnails for page previews)

ĆON FLUX #1

400 years in the future, the survivors of a widespread industrial disease live in the walled city of
Bregna, protecting them from the jungle outside.  Life in Bregna seems perfect, but not everything is as it seems.  Aeon Flux is a top Monican operative who fights for freedom.  The Bregnan authorities prepare a new weapon to use on the jungle surrounding the city, but Aeon, with the aid of agent Sithandra, is about to turn their plans against them.

ĆON FLUX #2

Family ties can prove to be useful, especially when Aeon Flux is pulling the strings.  Although she keeps her agent/assassin activity secret from her sister, Una, she plans to use her sister’s love-struck infatuation with a government scientist to her advantage.  Everyone benefits from this ‘match-making’ including Aeon’s fellow agent, Sithandra.  Her drawn-out training may seem to be a waste of time, but there is a lot she can learn from Aeon’s experience…and vice versa…

ĆON FLUX #3

The Bregnan government is planning to unleash their weapon on the dense jungle surrounding the wall.  Aeon & Sithandra infiltrate the heavily guarded labs with plans of sabotage.  But even Aeon is caught off guard, and soon escape becomes a matter of life and death.  Their mission failed, Aeon’s life draining from a bullet hole and a potentially genocidal mistake, Aeon has no choice but to reveal her secret to her sister, Una.  However, Aeon’s secret is not the only secret to be revealed – the Bregnan government infiltrate the rebellion’s hideout, thanks to information given by someone with good knowledge of the rebellion and their location.

ĆON FLUX #4

The most strategised plans are those that change.  The Monican rebellion’s plans to sabotage the Bregnan government’s defoliant cannons must adjust to a shortened timetable, and to flat-out destroy them seems like the best option to take.  Aeon has other priorities as well though, namely finding her mysterious trainee, Sithandra, and settling things the right way!  Nobody loathes manipulation more than Aeon, and this is a lesson that anyone who confronts her will remember for the rest of their short lives…
