Up and Coming Star of the future

Chris eyes 2012 glory

CHRIS HealeyCHRIS Healey

CHRIS Healey, the East Lancashire and Cheshire junior amateur champion, has set his sights on the possibility of being selected for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Romiley-based Chris, aged 17, has recently competed in a multi-nations boxing championship in Chemitz, Germany, losing out in the final by two points to the current German under-17 champion.

However, Chris admits that his boxing career came about more by accident than design.

He said: “I originally started boxing when I was about nine, but lost interest and started playing football.

“Eventually I got bored with football, did nothing for a few months, then took up boxing again. I really get a buzz from the training - it makes you feel good and I always want to win!

“Being selected to represent your county at a multi-nations competition was the highlight of my career to date in addition to possible selection for England.

“I really enjoyed the whole experience and the opportunity to fight at this level in another country was fantastic.”

A member of Bredbury, Stockport Amateur Boxing Club, Chris trains six nights a week (three nights at the club and he runs every other night), but he also recognises the importance of having a good academic background and qualifications.

“I came to Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College to take a sport orientated course - BTec National Sport Development and Fitness - so that I’ve always got something to fall back on,” added Chris.

“But I now want to defend my title successfully and initially achieve good grades at College before gaining employment to earn some money. Ultimately, I would like to turn professional, but not until I am at least 21, unless there is a chance that I could reach a standard high enough to be selected for the 2012 Olympics.

“I want to gain as much experience as possible through the amateur ranks and an opportunity to represent my country at such a sporting showcase event would be the highlight of my boxing career.”

REGINA SASKATCHEWAN CANADA

We are honoured to have received a formal invitation from our sporting colleagues in Canada to put on a show. This will include 11 of the clubs best junior boxers being accompanied by trainers.

The show is currently in the early stages of planning. Part of the planning process includes timing as it is vital to ensure the boxers do not miss any school time or exams, whilst ensuring the best weather conditions. We are looking at mid 2004 to travel.

Travel,  accommadation, food and spends for the juniors are needed. This trip will require financial assistance by way of donations from our supporters. Each of the boxers have a great deal to gain from a trip of this nature, not just in the boxing ring, but a life experience, for many of our juniors this is a once in a life time opportunity.

It is a fact that the kindest of deeds are done by strangers, we are aware that many people visit our site and would kindly ash them to consider making a donation to this trip. Every penny donated is a penny nearer to our target, we estimate the cost to be inexcess of £500 per head.

If you wish to make a donation our details are on the FUND RAISING / DONATIONS page.

Thankyou in advance.
