Arithmancy History:
Arithmancy is a branch of magic concerned with the magical properties of numbers.
The name Arithmancy is derived from two Greek words – arithmos (meaning number) and manteia (meaning divination). Arithmancy is thus the study of divination through numbers.
For over 2000 years, people have used arithmancy to analyze their strengths and weaknesses, overcome obstacles, and predict the future.
Arithmancy is a method of divination by numbers first used by the ancient Greeks. They assigned values to the letters in the names of combatants to foretell the outcome of battles. Later, in the ninth century BC, the Chaldeans in Arabia (where our modern number system also comes from) practiced a form of arithmancy that divided their alphabet into three parts, each part composed of seven letters which they attributed to the then known seven planets. Wizards still use a similar system today, all these thousands of years later.
Predicting the future can be used in conjunction with other forms of magic to increase your power or chances of success. For example, if you're going to make a love potion for someone you fancy, wouldn't it be helpful to know what day they're more likely to be in a receptive mood?
Like astrology, arithmancy claims to offer practitioners a system for determining favorable and unfavorable days for any individual. As a general rule, favorable days are supposed to be those that correspond to a person's self-expression number. An "eight" personality, for example, would be advised to schedule important events like starting a business or getting married so that they occur on the 8th, 17th, or 26th of the month (each of which reduces to 8).
Since any name or word can be converted to a number, arithmancy is also used to reveal "hidden kinships" among people, places, and things-the theory being that words and names that share the same numerical value are related and naturally go together. Thus a "six," will be best off driving a brand of car that reduces to 6, like a Honda or a
At the most basic level, simply comparing people's Character Numbers can aid in seeing if they would be compatible.
The Agrippan Method
In this method, the letters of a recent version of the Latin alphabet (with "U" and "V" considered to be separate letters, and "I" and "J" also considered distinct, which was not common until the 18th century), are assigned numerical values 1-9 as follows:

Based on these values, the value for a person's name is calculated. If the result is greater than 9, the values of the digits in the number are added up until it is reduced to a single-digit number.
This is a system used to predict the strengths and weaknesses in a person, by using the heart number, the social/life number, and the character/personality number. The heart number is determined by adding together only the vowels in a person's name. The social number is calculated by using only consonants. The character number is determined when both vowels and consonants are used.
A lesser known method is the Chaldean method. The most significant difference between the Agrippan method and the Chaldean method is that the number 9 is not used in the calculations. This method is otherwise similar to the Agrippan method, but the letters were assigned values partially based on equating Latin letters with letters of the Hebrew alphabet:

Lesson 2:
How it Works:
The first step in analyzing a name (or word) by arithmancy is to convert it to a set of numbers. Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a numerical value between 1 and 9, according to the following chart:

The letters A, J, and S have the value of 1. B, K, and T have the value of 2, and so forth. To analyze a name by hand, you write it down, and beneath each letter enter the corresponding numerical value.
For example:

Now add up the numbers. In this case, the result is 58.
If the total is more than 9-which it usually is-it must be "reduced" to a single digit by adding the component numbers together, more than once, if necessary.
Thus, 58 reduces to 13 (5 + 8 = 13), which reduces to 4 (1 + 3 = 4).
The final result (in this example, 4) is known as the Character Number. This number indicates the general personality type of the individual.
The next number calculated is the Heart Number. This number represents the individual's inner life and can indicate desires and fears hidden from others. The Self-Motivation Number is the reduced total of all the vowels in the name.
The final number calculated is the Social Number. This number represents the outer personality, the face an individual shows to the outside world. The Self-Image Number is the reduced total of all the consonants in the name.
What the Numbers Mean
1 | This is the number of the individual, the solitary unit. Ones are independent, focused, and determined. They set a goal and stick to it. They are leaders and inventors. Ones find it difficult to work with others and don't like to take orders. They can be self-centered, egotistical, and domineering. They are often loners. |
2 | Two represents interaction, two-way communication, cooperation, and balance. Twos are imaginative, creative, and sweet natured. Peace, harmony, commitment, loyalty, and fairness are characteristic. But two also introduces the idea of conflict, opposing forces, and the contrasting sides of things: night and day, good and evil. Twos can be withdrawn, moody, self-conscious and indecisive. |
3 | Three represents the idea of completeness or wholeness, as in the threesomes past-present-future and mind-body-spirit. Three indicates talent, energy, an artistic nature, humor, and social ease. Threes are often lucky, easygoing, and highly successful, but they can also be unfocused, easily offended, and superficial. |
4 | Like a table that rests solidly on four legs, four indicates stability and firmness. Fours enjoy hard work. They are practical, reliable and down to earth; they prefer logic and reason to flights of fancy. They are good at organization and getting things done. Like the cycle of the four seasons, they are also predictable. They can be stubborn, suspicious, overly practical and prone to angry outbursts. The conflicts possible in "two" are doubled in four. |
5 | Five is the number of instability and imbalance, indicating change and uncertainty. Fives are drawn to many things at once but commit to none. They are adventurous, energetic and willing to take risks. They enjoy travel and meeting new people but may not stay in one place very long. Fives can be conceited, irresponsible, quick-tempered and impatient. |
6 | Six represents harmony, friendship, and family life. Sixes are loyal, reliable, and loving. They adapt easily. They do well in teaching and the arts, but are often unsuccessful in business. They are sometimes prone to gossip and complacency. |
7 | Perceptive, understanding, and bright, sevens enjoy hard work and challenges. They are often serious, scholarly, and interested in all things mysterious. Originality and imagination are more important than money and material possessions. Sevens can also be pessimistic, sarcastic, and insecure. |
8 | Eight indicates the possibility of great success in business, finance, and politics. Eights are practical, ambitious, committed, and hard working. They can also be jealous, greedy, domineering, and power-hungry. Eight is said to be the most unpredictable of numbers and can indicate the pinnacle of success or the depths of failure; the potential to go either way is present from the beginning. |
9 | Represents completion and achievement to the fullest degree (as it is the complete number, three, expressed three times). Nines dedicate themselves to service, often as teachers, scientists, and humanitarians. Strongly determined, they work tirelessly and are an inspiration to others. However, they can also be arrogant and conceited when things don't go their way. |

Birth Date Number:
This is perhaps the easiest number to find. This is simply the day of the month that you were born on. If you were born on the:
First - you have a strong will. You know what you want and you usually get it. You would do well in your own business, especially if you had loyal employees to help implement some of your grand plans. Beware, however, of a tendency to procrastinate! Set your goals now and keep pushing forward.
Second - you crave harmony and strive to please others. A bit of a perfectionist, you do well in a supportive role at work, especially when you like your coworkers. Beware of a tendency to take on more work than you can reasonably handle! Your home is important to you, so make it a pleasing place to live.
Third - you are a happy-go-lucky type of person. You hate being stuck in a back office and probably spend a lot of time around the water cooler. You would do well in a fun job that allows your playful, sociable nature to shine through. To you, life is a banquet. Just watch out that you don't overdo it!
Fourth - you tend to be practical and prefer the tried-and-true approach to life. Be careful, however, that you don't get stuck in a rut! Your earthy nature may draw you to fields such as home building, construction, landscaping, or even floristry.
Fifth - you thrive on adventure and change. Definitely keep your resume current! You may go through several jobs before you find the right position in sales, promotion work, or even the import-export business. Whatever you do, people find you naturally charming.
Sixth - you are loving but somewhat possessive. This is because you take your responsibilities very seriously. Your family is extremely important to you and if you have children, you have probably considered home schooling. Stop worrying so much, especially around money.
Seventh - you are naturally intuitive and have your own way of doing things. Learn patience and avoid risky investments! You would do well in any profession that allows you to work in solitude. Meditation is a must for you!

Eighteenth - you do your best when you are doing good for others. At times you may be torn between your spiritual side and your natural desire for material success. Rather than feeling like you have to make a tough choice, you can do both. Find a cause, organization, or artistic outlet you truly believe in and you are sure to excel!
Nineteenth - you may feel as if you have a special mission in life--even if it's not clear to you what that is. Plus it may seem as if you have had to overcome many obstacles to get where you are now. If you are dissatisfied in your current career, it's probably because the company isn't taking full advantage of your leadership skills. You may wish to consider becoming involved in motivational speaking, writing, or training.
Twentieth - you care a great deal about the feelings of others. Try not to fret so much about what others may think of you! Twenty-Ninth - your number "reduces" to the Master Number 11 (2 + 9 = 11). With this Master Number, you are intensely interested in spiritual matters and have good intuitive insight into the world around you. Avoid a tendency to brood! Instead you should keep busy with little projects around the home. Whatever you do for a career, you will most likely have a positive impact on many people.
Thirtieth - people are naturally drawn to you and enjoy your company. A bit of a flirt, you may occasionally send out mixed signals and give people the wrong idea. All the same, you are a fabulous host or hostess. Just remember that moderation is the key!
Thirty-First - you are practical and loving. You enjoy working with your hands. Loyalty is important to you in all your relationships. Just avoid a tendency to make yourself your favorite topic of conversation!

Destiny number:
The destiny number describes what we are intended to learn. Metaphysically speaking, the destiny number describes our purpose in the plan of life. The types of people and experiences indicated by this number will be surprising unless the personality traits of character, heart, or social numbers are the same.
If the character number is the same as the destiny number, you settle upon a career early in life, and the experiences you encounter speed your progress.
If the heart number is the same as the destiny number, you quickly meet the people and experiences that make you feel at ease.
If the social number is the same as the destiny number, you have the opportunities to live up to your childhood lifestyle fantasies.
Few people have the same numbers in their personality categories and destiny. Most people live by the hunt-and-peck method and learn from experience.
By understanding the meaning of the destiny number, you are able to identify who you are meant to become, what you are intended to do to get there, why you came here to begin with, where you should look for help, and when timing is right. How you do these things depends upon how you cope with the challenges in your life.
Instructions for finding your destiny number:
Step 1: Add the month, day, and year of birth numbers.
Step 2: Add the digits of the sum repeatedly until you have a single digit.
That digit is you Destiny Number.
