Welcome to the website of Stepy's Coaches Durham Sunday League Division One side Brandon Sports Club.

Brandon Sports Club also known as The Cricketers last year gained promotion from Division Two after blitzing the opposition, 21 wins and just one defeat lead the lads to glory and all around the club are optimistic of a third promotion in a row this term.  Richie Graham lead the team to a fabulous league and cup double in 2005/2006. First Division football awaits this year and hopefully the Premier League next season!

 Brandon SC vs Houghton Commrades

LEAGUE

LATEST RESULT

Sunday 4 March 2007

Houghton Mill  (0) 0 - 2 (1) Brandon SC

LEAGUE

The Sports Club got back to winnig ways today at Houghton Mill All Stars. On a blustery day and on a difficult pitch the early exchanges brought a lot of misplaced passes and not a lot of goalmouth action, due to this is wasn't surprising that a set peice brought the opening goal. Gary 'Leather' Brown smashed home a free-kick into the top right-hand corner of the net to give the visitors the lead after 15 minutes when Chris Lawson had been upended 25 yards from goal. The game continued how it had started for the most part with neither keeper having much to do. The scoreline remained 1-0 into half-time. In the second period Houghton tried to get back into the game, but once again not a lot of goalmouth action was present and they never threatened. The game was effectively secured for Brandon on the hour when Kevin Harker found space beyond the last defender and advanced to the goal, as the keeper closed him down Kev produced a good finish to score from a tight angle.

Brandon SC vs Biddick Inn

LEAGUE

Brandon and Biddick have enjoyed some great encounters over the last two seasons and this has become a very familiar fixture of late. Both sides have accompanied one another in promotion over those seasons, with Biddick winning Division Three (Brandon Second) and Brandon winning Division Two (Biddick Third). Not surprising with Biddick winning Division Three that they came out on top of the fixtures in the 2004/05 season. Earning a 4-4 draw at Brandon and winning 6-0 at home (which clinched the title). Into 2005/2006 and things were different however, Brandon travelled to Biddick early in the season and triumphed 6-3. The return fixture was 4-1 to Brandon who also won a Durham Driveways Cup Semi-Final 3-0 at Brandon. Earlier this season the teams shared the points at Biddick in a game that Brandon threw away, leading 2-0 with 15 minutes to go and ending up conceding with the last kick of the ball to drop two-points in a 2-2 scoreline.

Latest News

Sunday 4 February - SPIRITED PERFORMANCE NOT ENOUGH!

With key injuries to the squad Richie Graham sent out a patched up side to face table-toppers Washington Arms, Brandon sit second but can overtake Washington if they can obtain maximum points from the three games in hand. It was maybe not a surprise when the home side took the lead after 15 minutes, but it was in freakish fashion, stand-in goalkeeper Anthony Burnip raced off his line to clear, only for his kick to strike an oncoming striker and ricochet cruelly into the net. Brandon were back on terms 10 minutes later though when Chris Lawson smashed a free-kick into the left-hand corner of the net from 25 yards.

It was Washington who regained the lead early into the second half though and Brandon had to start again. They did do so however, Michael Fort took the ball 30 yards to hammer past the keeper for 2-2, but with 10 minutes to go and Brandon pushing for a winner they were caught on the break and were behind again. It was 2-4 just 5 minutes from time, and although Fort bagged his second with time running out, it was too late and Brandon slipped to a third league defeat.

Sunday 28 January - LADS PROGRESS IN CUP!

Division Four side Washington Oasis posed quite a challenge in the cup encounter last week. With the wind playing a big part  a depleted Brandon went in 2-0 up at half-time, a goal from Lee Johnson early on set the Sports Club away. Johnsons goal was followed by a neat overhead kick from Gary Brown following a scramble in the Oasis area, the ball fell to Brown, with his back to goal he chipped the ball up and performed an overhead kick which somehow got between the keeper and a defender both close to the near post. The second half was difficult for the visitors, just ten minutes in and the lads conceded a penalty, it was converted for 2-1 and the home side began to pile on the pressure, with 25 minutes to go Brown handled in the area and gave away a second penalty, the taker went the same way, as did Myers who palmed the ball away. It was a much needed wake up call for Brandon who then won a penalty of their own, converted calmly by Fort. It was 4-1 shorrtly after when Harker rounded the goalkeeper to score. Oasis scored two goals late on which caused some nervous moments, but many will feel the fightback came too late and Brandon progress to the next round.

Sunday 5 November - LATE SHOW FROM BRANDON WINS THE DAY!

Three late goals from Andrew Johnson maintained Brandon's 100% home record and kept them top of the Division One table. Washington Arms struck first in a largely entertaining game which saw 1st triumph over 3rd at the Cricket Club, it was a very close encounter for 89 minutes and when the hosts trailed 0-1 with 19 minutes to go many felt a point would be good. However Andrew Johnson thought otherwise, first he struck a free-kick from 25 yards past the visiting goalkeeper via the bar. Good work from Fort and Gibson lead to a sweet right-footed volley ramming home inside the box for 2-1, and finally as Washington pushed forward for an equaliser Johnson found himself with space in the area to chip over the oncoming keeper. It was a very hard fought game and Brandon will be delighted to have taken the spoils.

Sunday 29 October - LADS WIN IN DULL DERBY GAME!

Brandon Sports Club made the short trip to Ushaw Moor this morning for a derby game in the First Division of the Stepy's Coaches Durham Sunday League. Ian Myers was back in goal following a broken finger, though not 100% (when is he ever?!) and the lads were boosted with a fully fit squad. The game was a little displeasing of a derby match and on a bobbly and soft pitch it was a case of who made the least number of mistakes in the game. A key mistake came on 15 minutes when a low Andrew Johnson cross was allowed to evade everyone including the keeper as it trickled into the net for 1-0 to the visitors. Brandon doubled their lead on 40 minutes when a poorly positioned wall allowed Chris Lawson to fire a free-kick low and hard into the bottom left hand corner wich would then make it a difficult job for the hosts to get back into the game. The second half passed without much of a spark and despite a poor performance the lads claimed the three points.

Sunday 8 October - BRANDON HIT DOUBLE FIGURES!

Brandon hit 12 and conceded 2 in this mornings cup tie against Chicago Rock (formerly Pelton FC). Andrew Johnson hit 4, Scott Bryden bagged 2 as did Kevin Harker. Andrew Hird, Chris Lawson, Michael Fort and Andy Robson got one.

Sunday 1 October - LADS PROGRESS IN DERBY CUP TIE!

Brandon won with ease at local side Esh Winning Cricket Club this morning. Chris Lawson finished off a good passing move after fifteen minutes with a finish from 12 yards to give the visitors the lead. Little else happened in the first half as Brandon led 1-0 at the interval despite never really getting out of first gear. The tempo was upped immediately in the second half as Andrew Johnson and Lawson notched a goal each and thats how it ended. 3-0!

Sunday 24 September - BRANDON BACK TO WINNING WAYS!

After throwing three points away last week at Biddick, the lads showed great bouncebackability to complete a league double over Newton Aycliffe. Despite Gary Brown scorin for the visitors Kevin Harker restored parity when he latched onto a good cross from Andrew Johnson to score from close range. After the half Johnson fed Harker again, this time from a poor clearance from the goalkeeper and Harker scored his second, tapping into an empty net from 8 yards.  Aycliffe pressed but never looked like getting back on terms and the result was confirmed when Johnson found himself in space on the edge of the area to beat the oncoming goalkeeper. Johnson picked up a second before the end as Brandon picked up a deserved victory.

Thursday 31 August - BARE BONE ELEVEN WINS AGAIN!

With just 12 available players travelling to Aycliffe, Richie Graham was forced to shuffle the pack yet again, early in the game it seemed as if it was going to be a bad night for the visitors as Newton Aycliffe took the lead, but Brandon responded in impecable fashion and were on top for the rest of the first half, Dean Crampton grabbing an equalizer on the half hour. The second half was a very scrappy affair with Brandon just edging the game when Gibson was brought down in the area for a Brandon penalty which was converted by Scott Bryden. In the twenty remaining minutes Brandon were on the back foot, but the backline was solid and the visitors held on for three points in what was hailed by boss Richie Graham as a great win!

Sunday 27 August - MAKESHIFT TEAM DOES THE JOB!

With an absentee list as long as his arm Richie Graham had to put together a team capable of beating Hetton for the second time in 8 days. Andrew Johnson, Lee Johnson, Michael Fort, Ryan Emsley, Jamie Bowes, Lee Nyland and Kevin Harker were all missing but the lads responded well to the adversity as they started off flying, Scott Bryden broke free inside the area in the first minute to see his cross turned in by a defender with Gary Brown closing in. On 10 minutes Andrew Hird had space and time in the area to double the lead, and on 15 minutes from a good ball from Lawson, Hird slammed home his second from 15 yards. Brandon seemed to slow down after that and were made to endure long periods of pressure up until half time. The defence was as solid as ever and it seemed nothing could breach the backline as more pressure was put on the visitors in the second half. Lawson should have added a fourth on two occasions before he finally did from close range and Brandon closed the game out well to claim three points along with a clean sheet. It was a great performance from all involved as Anthony Burnip and Sam Davidson made full debuts and Brandon made it two wins from three games in their new division.

Team: - Ian Myers, Anthony Burnip, Gary Brown, Jason Manners, Andy Robson, Jamie Brett, Andrew Hird, David Hind, Scott Bryden, Sam Davidson, Chris Lawson. Subs: - Jamie Donelly, Scott Hopson.

Thursday 24 August - BRANDON UP AND RUNNING WITH HOME WIN

Second Division Champions Brandon Sports Club played host to Second Division Runner-up Durham Garden House (formerly Salutation FC) tonight at home in the second game of the season lookingto get points on the board following the dissapointing defeat to Langley Park last week, With key players Michael Fort, Lee Johnson, Ryan Emsley, Jamie Bowes and Chris Lawson missing the lads had a tough task however relished the challenge. Brandon started very well and Andrew Johnson opened the scoring, he added another and Kevin Harker also got a goal to set the lads flying at 3-0, a moment of stupidity followed on the half-hour when Gary Brown received his marching orders, and the home side would have to battle hard with a man down. Garden House pulled a goal back on the half-time whistle when a deep cross found an unmarked striker to nod home from six yards. The only bad mark on a flawless defensive performance in the first half. Brandon fought well and soaked up a lot of early pressure from the visitors in the second half. It seemed that there was no way through for Garden House and as their hopes were fading Andrew Johnson sealed his hat-trick to end any doubts from a one-on-one following a big upfield ball from Myers. Debutants Jamie Donelly and Anthony Burnip came on for the impressive David Hind and workhorse striker Kev Harker, and with 10 minutes to go Scott Bryden added a fifth from close range after good work from Johnson in the area. A fantastic home win for the lads, who now hopefully have kick-started their push for the Premiership!

Team: - Ian Myers, Lee Nyland, Jason Manners, Andy Robson, Gary Brown, Andrew Hird, Scott Bryden, Jamie Brett, David Hind, Kevin Harker, Andrew Johnson. Subs: - Jamie Donelly, Anthony Burnip

Sunday 20 August - ANOTHER CUP WIN FOR BRANDON

The lads showed great bouncebackability to come from 2-0 down to progress in the League Cup. Brandon were 5-2 winners in the first of two fixtures away to Hetton Fox and Hounds in 8 days. Michael Fort and Andrew Johnson levelled it up at half time and then in the second half  Brandon scored three unanswered goals to cruise through to Round Two. Andrew Johnson grabbing his second, Chris Lawson and Scott Bryden getting the others.

Thursday 17 August - HEARTACHE IN LEAGUE OPENER!

Langley Park Cricket Club defeated the Sports Club with two first half goals. Brandon came out all guns blazing in the second half but unfortunately only a Michael Fort strike was possible and the lads must be more economic with chances if they are to challenge for honours this term.

Sunday 13 August - WINNING START!

Brandon Sports Club made it to Round two of the Stafferi Cup after a 3-1 win over Third Division side Pelaw Grange Dogs, after falling behind before half time the lads replied well with a goals from the new boys, a brace from Harker either side of a penalty from Scott Bryden did the damage for a depleated Sports Club. Ryan Emsley, Jamie Brett and Andrew Johnson all were unavailable.

Sunday 13 August - COUNTDOWN TO KICK OFF!

Its been a long hot summer and made even more difficult with no football to play, now as we approach the second weekend in August, the beautiful game is back on the agenda! The lads start at home to Pelaw Grange Dogs in the First Round of the Stafferi Cup this morning with new signing Scott Bryden expected to start. The lads go into the game with good spirits after the 6-0 friendly victory over Nevilles Cross.
