My Pap & Grandma's House

In the summer time it seemed as if life itself revolved around my grandmother’s front porch. The weekend before "Decoration Day" we would bring the 3 big old rockers and the swing up from the basement and add another coat of green paint to them, whether they needed it or not. The awning company would bring the big green striped awning from storage and put it up to offer us shade and protection from summer showers. Then we would shop for a new bamboo rug to put on the porch floor. The rockers were brought out and the swing put up. Tables were a must to hold our iced tea and ice cream treats on those warm summer evenings.

When Decoration Day arrived we would take a ceremonial walk to the cemetery about a mile from the house. Up until a few years before his death, Pap would carry a bouquet of flowers to place on his wife’s grave. My great grandmother, Sallie Elizabeth Brenneman, died in 1950, 7 years before I was born. While I did not know her personally, I felt I learned to know much about her through Pap, my grandmother and mother. My mother was very close to her. She was known as "mam". My mother’s father left when she was four and she and my grandmother lived with Pap and Mam. One of the few pictures of Mam was taken on the front porch.

After Decoration Day, the front porch became the living room. We would eat our dinner and then gather there with my grandmother and Pap. I usually sat on the swing and fell asleep there many evenings listening to the grown ups talk. The evening was spent leisurely catching up on the day, telling jokes and sharing stories of the past and singing together. I wish I would have had a tape recorder to have captured those precious evenings.

 

They must have forgotten their smiles this day!  But it is a great picture as it is the only one I have come across of my mom with her family!  That is her on the right next to her half brother "Jim".  In the back are my grandma Helen, Pap, Uncle Bill and my great grandma Sallie.  My mom was born in 1930 so I am guessing this photo to be around 1933.
