MATERNAL LINE - HELEN IRENE MUNDIS

Most little girls love dolls and doll houses. When I was young I felt that I had a life size doll house to play in. It was my grandmother’s house. Her house was filled with treasures from the past. Each room filled with beautiful furniture and household items from generations past. In my mind I can still picture each room and the floral wallpapers and patterned linoleum that added a decorative touch to each of them. The brick fireplace was no longer used but was a favorite nook for me to curl up in with a book.

My Grandma lived there with her father, my "Pap", who lived to be 97. Born in 1870, he continued to be the head of the family up until shortly before his death. He was ill only a short time before he passed and until then shared stories of his life with his family. With my parents and my home just across the street, my grandma’s house was an extension of our home. I think I could safely say I spent as much time there as a child as I did my own. My favorite room to play in was my grandmothers bedroom. It was on the third floor with big windows looking out on the neighborhood. In her room was a big closet filled with the history of our family. I could easily spend a whole day playing up there and looking through boxes of cards and pictures. I would curl up right inside the closet and get lost in the past.
