| The World of Darkness is set in a world very much like our own, albeit darker and abounding with the supernatural. It operates using the Story teller system, which is intuitive and easily modifiable, hence the large amount of different game systems which the basic rules stretch to. Using only D10's the Story teller system is far less rules heavy than most, and features a great degree of freedom for the Story Teller. The morality system is an important feature of the world of darkness, as acts of degradation will slowly wear away at the characters hearts and minds, eventually turning them into true monsters. The basic W.O.D system allows for mortal characters in this twisted reflection of our own world, whilst other expansions allow for the players to adopt the persona of one of the W.O.D's various supernatural denizens.

| Vampire the Requiem is perhaps the best known of the World of Darkness systems. Vampire, as its name suggests, allows players to take on the role of immortal vampires. These are, on the whole (although there are some exceptions) not the monsters of traditional myth, they are far more the Vampire's of modern gothic fiction, tortured beings who must find a balance between the human they were and the ravenous beast within. This makes great use of the world of darkness morality system, although it is replaced with humanity in Vampire, forcing you to act responsibly or be subsumed by the beast, becoming a ravening blood thirsty monster.

| Werewolf the Forsaken allows you to take on the persona of one of the Uratha, a werewolf. Unlike the werewolves of fiction and tradition, the Uratha are not mindless beasts, cursed to rampage on the night of the full moon. The Uratha are born as they are, beings half of flesh, half of spirit, with the ability to transform between several shapes, man, wolf and wolf-man (amongst others) and the ability (and duty) to travel between the realms of spirit and flesh and police the border between the two. Morality, now known as harmony, plays a major part in werewolf, as commiting sins against harmony (often much different from human sins) will drop a werewolf's harmony, making the spirit world that much more hostile and eventually reducing him to the state of a mindless hunter.

| Mage, as the name suggests, allows you to play a mage in the World of Darkness. |
![]() | Based on a modified version of the White Wolf Exalted story teller system, the three Scion books (Hero, Demi-God and God) allow you to take on the role of a child of one of a varied pantheon of ancient gods. Beginning as a hero you progress on your way, battling the minions of the ancient titans, before becoming a full fledged divinity yourself. This is a great system by White Wolf, set on an altered version of our earth but outside of the World of Darkness. Its greatly simplified system allows for much easier access to new players, whilst still offering much to more experienced gamers.

![]() | Another great game by White Wolf, rather than tackling themes of modern horror, however, Exalted is set in a world of epic fantasy heroes and has a distinct anime feel. Exalted is White Wolf's answer to more traditional fantasy RPG's, but takes a distinctly different tact. Rather than starting off as a powerless adventurer with next to no power or skill, as in most roleplay systems, Exalted gets you straight into the action by putting you in the persona of a powerful demi-god, the chosen of the Unconquered Sun. The core book contains rules for the Solar Exalted, once chosen rules of creation, then driven mad and only now returned to the world. Further expansions allow players to take on the role of Lunars, the Solars shapeshifting mates, Sidereals, the mysterious manipulators of fate who caused the usurpation of the Solars, Abyssals, twisted reflections of the Solars created by their slain enemies, and the Dragon blooded, the weakest but most numerous of the Exalted, once the vanguard of the Solars forces but turned betrayers and now rules of Creation. | An unusual and original combination of the Lovecraftian Cthulhu mythos and the anime, this system sees players sent into the near future and placed in the roles of defenders of earth against the returning Old Ones and their cults and the invading forces of the Migou. This differs greatly from traditional Cthulhu in that, whilst players are still subject to the slide into insanity caused by dealing with otherworldly beings, rather than hiding from the minions of the Old Ones the players get to battle them, in Mechs!!!! There are numerous character classes and types of game available, ranging from mech based combat games, through Guyver like Tager warriors to more political research related characters/games as Occult researchers and sorcerers. This game is one of the largest in scope that I have ever seen, and its innovative system, a cross between traditional dice rolling and poker is great fun, and very intuitive.

| Set in the Warhammer 40K universe, Dark Heresy allows players to join the retinue of an Imperial Inquisitor from one of the various Ordos and hunt down the enemies of the Imperium! Due to lots of messing about on the part of Games Workshop the core rulebook is currently unavailable until Fantasy Flight games, who bought the rites when Black Industries were closed, finishes printing their new editions. We expect to see new copies at some point in June. The expansion, the Inquisitors handbook and the various supplements (gm's screen and the scenario book included) are still available in store.
