BORDER COLLIE SOLILOQUY

THE THOUGHTS OF A BORDER COLLIE

My Mate Trooper

Trooper's my best mate really, but he does get me into some scrapes!

He is always winding me up and John and Cathy don't have a clue what he gets up to when they are out, I could write a book.

Ahhh, Trooper, Trooper, Trooper! Where do I begin.......

Trooper is a lovable rogue! He came to live with us Christmas 2001, he was nine months old, we were going to keep one of our puppies but Trooper's needs were urgent so a decision was made and the puppy "Harrison" would go to a family member. John needed some persuading as our dog family was growing. "He needs a home John" she says, "Look he's no trouble" she tells him, but Ahh! I can see right through all that cuddling up and playing the I'm such a cute puppy act. "OK  Lets see how it goes" John says........  Screams from the lounge Cathy comes running, Trooper shoots past her with Rodney the Parakeet in his mouth!!Can you picture it!

Me and Charlygirl know better than to mess with Rodney, he rules the roost, he is fearless and it didn't take us long to learn to respect him. There is nothing more relaxing than laying on the sofa while Rodney preens my ears, one wrong move though and you get a nip on the nose! And now there was Trooper making his escape with him in his jaws!.... Cathy managed to save him and he was fine apart from a few ruffled feathers. Trooper learned a quick lesson that day and has never bothered Roddy since.

Though he does have an attraction for the Kingfisher on the lounge wall!

First outing to the park together Trooper is kept on a long line until he is familiar with the place. He was like a dog possessed on a Bungee rope! not that I can blame him, me and Charly free to run, he wants to join in the fun and meet our friends, but we had to go home. Cathy decides for a few days to exercise him separately and see how things go. After a week or so we are getting along famously. It was discovered that Trooper had a fear aggression on leash towards other dogs, this would be redirected on to me! Now I'm a quiet reserved kind of guy, but I wasn't going to stand for this! So I put him in his place a few times, it was never anything really nasty, poor Trooper was just confused and with lots of help from John and Cathy things have improved greatly and a year down the line we have become great friends, and he can now walk past other dogs without flipping his lid, like most friends we do have the occasional fall out but it's soon sorted and back to being best buddies.

Cathy took Trooper for a try at sheep work and of course being a Border Collie he took to it like a duck to water

not that all Collies do, I have seen some run a mile at being confronted with sheep. This has worked wonders with Trooper and he has learned to respect and  listen instead of just charging in and causing trouble wherever he goes. We just have to work on Black Labrador's now, but I'm sure Troops will make it 'cause he's a little star......

Super Trooper

Trooper became a little celebrity last year (2004) while at a Sheepdog Trial, Jim Cropper introduced Cathy to a Gentleman who had spotted Trooper and wanted to take some photographs of him. Trooper was very obliging and posed his little heart out.

The Gentleman was Steven Townsend, the UK's leading Wildlife and Working Dog Artist, he wanted to do a painting of Trooper. Humph! If I had been there I am sure I would have been Steven's first choice, Ah well, never mind, we cant have everything can we.

After a few weeks of photo shoots Steven got the picture he wanted and started to put his paintbrush to work and I must say the result is stunning
People think the print is actually a  photograph, it has been painted with such artisic skill it looks real, every detail down to every hair is done to perfection. The detail of the stone wall is amazing.

Stevens faith has proved to be a cornerstone of his dedication and ability. Many customers are unaware that hidden in each and every picture he produces, the initials JTC (Jesus The Creator) appear, affirming his belief.
