BORDER COLLIE SOLILOQUY

THE THOUGHTS OF A BORDER COLLIE

Unethical Breeders Prisoners For Profit

Chester was the result of a puppy farm, don't make the same mistake we did. Even though getting him brought an enormous amount of heartache, we are so glad we got him, he changed our lives, we would'nt have the three beautiful dogs we have now, and through Chess we have learned how important it is to do research and find a good breeder. Before you get a dog consider what impact this little bundle of fluff is going to have on your life. By choosing a reputable breeder you are off to a good start.

Poor breeding conditions lead to all kinds of problems, especially among pedigree dogs where careful breeding is needed to minimise the risk of hereditary diseases. Owners are devastated when their puppy, which appeared to be healthy, is riddled with parasites or suffering from a serious disease which can cost hundreds of pounds in vets fees. Thousands of puppies are bred in cruel puppy farms by people who don't  care whether the animals suffer. Starting at six months, the bitch is bred every heat cycle. She is often weak, malnourished, and dehydrated. Rarely, if ever, is she provided with veterinary care. She cannot maintain her productivity past her fourth or fifth year. After that, she is nothing more than a drain on the farms resources and must be disposed of. If she's lucky, she'll be humanely euthanized. More often than not, she will be shot or bludgeoned to death. Discarded, her wasted body will lie forgotten in a local landfill or rubbish dump.

The dogs are kept in small wire cages for their entire lives. They arenever  allowed out. They never touch solid ground or grass. Many of the dogs are injured in fights that occur in the cramped cages from which there is no escape. Puppy farms maximize their profits by not spending money on proper food, housing or veterinary care. Dogs in puppymills are debarked often by ramming a steel rod down their throats to reputure their vocal cords.Puppies are taken from their mother when they are 5 to 8 weeks old and sold to brokers who pack them in crates for resale  all over the country. Many of the puppies do not survive the trip.

This could  be your puppies mother!

Innocent families buy the puppies only to find that the puppy is very ill or has genetic or emotional problems. Often the puppies die of disease. Many others have medical problems that cost thousands of pounds. And many have emotional problems because they have not been properly socialized. Please don't bring this misery into your home.

If you see adverts with multiple breeds for sale do not be tempted, these pups will have come from a puppy farm.

Never buy from someone who says they will deliver the pup, again, these will be from a Puppy Farm.

A reputable breeder will invite you to their home where you will see the puppies with their mother and sometimes the father will also be on site.

Mans Best Friend?

Come take me from this stinking smell
From cage of fear and living hell
I'm six years old no more pups for me
I have done my deed will soon be 'free'

From the squalor of the puppy farm
I 've done my time but done no harm
And lost the loves I thought were mine
I am useless now and that's a crime

As for reward I'll be put to rest
With a shot to the head
To make room for the next
She will sit in my cage, she will never be free
And continue, as mine, this life's misery
And what of the puppies?
What happens to them?
At five weeks old they are dragged from my pen
Replaced by a male to start over again
So who ever said we are 'mans best friend'!

Pups crated up travel far and wide
To unknown places but some won't survive
For those that do will be sold for a profit
But the people who buy them will be out of pocket

For the sake of my puppies
Put a stop to it now
Please break up this chain
For I don't know how.

THE REPUTABLE BREEDER

This breeder is a professional and he has a good reputation to maintain. His goal is to produce beautiful and sound specimens which anyone would be proud to own. Profit, if any is made, goes toward future breedings, always aimed toward the betterment of the breed, or for show entries, handler's fees, new equipment and important veterinary tests. Both the mother and pups are fed the highest quality diet. Many trips to the vet assure him that mother and pups are thriving under the very best care. The pups are raised in a busy area of the house or kennel where they are socialized, groomed and exposed to different kinds of stimuli. They are touched and talked to, cuddled and even sung to. They are never sold before they are eight weeks old. Every buyer is interviewed at length and they fill out a questionnaire....pups are placed only in homes where they will receive the best of care. The breeder spends time with each new owner, educating and answering questions. Follow-up calls are made to make sure the pups are adjusting well. Each new owner receives a bill of sale and health guarantees, vaccination record, minimum three-generation pedigree, guarantee of registration with the KC and thorough puppy care and nutrition information. If the puppy is not considered to be of such quality as it will better the breed the puppy is sold with a limited registration or non-breeding agreements. The new owners are encouraged to continue a relationship with the breeder, and to call and ask questions at any time during the dogs life. It may cost you a bit more to get a dog from this type of breeder but compared to the lower cost of a puppy farm breeder its money well spent. You will have a much higher price to pay if you purchase from the Puppy Farmer.

Its very important that puppies are raised in an environment that will teach them what they need to grow in to stable happy family pets.
A puppy isolated early in life from other puppies and humans will not only fail to establish satisfying social contact with conspecifics or enjoy companionship with people later in life (such puppies are extremely fearful of any social contact), they will also exhibit widespread behavioral and cognitive disabilities as well. Isolated puppies exhibit poor learning and problem-solving abilities and are extremely hyperactive or rigidly inhibited, are emotionally over-reactive and unable to encounter novel social or environmental situations without extreme fear and avoidance.
Visit this excellent website which explains how your puppy changes and develops through the crucial weeks of puppyhood, you will only get this type of development from puppies that are raised with caring breeders, puppies raised in puppy farms don't get this start in life which is so important.

Over 12,000 healthy dogs are destroyed every year in the UK, nobody should be paid to breed more!

To most, they're man's best friend and a life long companion, but for some disreputable traders, puppies are simply a commodity to be cheaply and cruelly farmed and sold. http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/east/series6/puppy_farms_dog_dealers.shtml

WAG- A WARNING TO THE PUBLIC

http://www.wag-ayrshire.org.uk/pressreleases.html#warning

WAG is taking the unusual step of issuing a warning to all those who are considering buying a puppy. Evidence has now come to light that many Puppy Farmers are sending litters into housing estates for onward sale. This is an attempt to con the public into believing that they are purchasing a 'home bred' puppy. Many are being duped by this and the authorities seem powerless or unwilling to act. Due to this WAG have decided to issue this warning and repeat any time that you go to see a puppy SEE THE PARENTS. Accept no excuses and remember if you do see an adult dog make sure it looks like the puppies. Dogs are like humans they pass on similar traits.

Ken McKie on behalf of WAG said, this is a horrible and devious method of selling puppies. Not only have they had the likelihood of travelling hundreds of miles but also separated from their birth mothers. We should take it as a compliment that our message is getting out but like many rogue traders they will try and find another way to rob the public of their money. Remember if something does not seem right, walk away. Also when you buy one puppy, yes just one puppy, you are condemning another litter and a poor long suffering bitch into more misery and despair.

In The link below are extracts from a message we've received from the campaign to stop grants for puppy farming in Wales. Please do all you can to support this campaign. The section about writing letters to "your Assembly Minister" really only applies to people living in Wales - but anyone can write to their local newspaper or sign the on-line petition.
