My Story

I want to share this with you in hopes that it may help you or someone you love someday.

Over the past five years I have been having trouble with my Menstrual Cycle. I know you guys are thinking “ Sheesh a woman thing” Please read though because it may help someone close to you.

It all started in 1998 my cycles started to get heavier and longer. I thought nothing of it at first thinking it was the beginning of Menopause. Over the next few months it got progressively worse. I went to the doctor for it thinking it might be somewhat abnormal, he said it was a little abnormal however he did nothing but give me pain pills for the pain that I went through, so I could function somewhat normally on those days. I got very alarmed when two years ago I had a cycle that I used two full packages of pads and two full packages of tampons in two days, that is 18 of each a day.

I went to the doctor and still only pain pills were prescribed. Still the cycles were getting worse and worse. I got to the point that I could not take it anymore and went to the Walk in clinic in June of 2003, this is when I finally met up with the first step in my recovery from this problem. The doctor’s name is Michael A. Jacobs and he is actually a physicians assistant, he did and exam and referred me to an OBGYN that would take the case from there,(Chris was there) I had an appointment the next day with Dr Kenneth Raskin.

I went into his office and explained the last five years to him and he said that there were certain steps he had to take before assuming anything. He started me on Prometrium in order to lessen the flow and lighten the cycle. These pills did not work I was back to see him in a few weeks after taking the first cycle of meds. It actually made the cycle worse. Now it usually works on most people but not this time. So from that he did a biopsy of the uterus. This is when I found out that I had Complex Hyperplasia. Now this is the third of four stages which are staged like this:

1.Endometriosis. 2.Hyperplasia. 3.Complex Hyperplasia. 4.Cancer.

The only cure for this is a hysterectomy. (Chris was there)

Now he was rather shocked that I had this condition as it usually shows up in either elderly ladies (55+) or extremely obese (250 pounds+) women. I am neither and therefore I was told I broke the mold on this one. I am only 35 years old and only weigh 120 pounds. I am now a patient of interest to a handful of doctors.

After the surgery which took place August 11th 2003 (Chris Was there all day holding my hand) I get the results of the final pathology back and it is Endometrial Cancer, I was to say the least Shocked and scared.( Chris had to work this day that I found out, but he called every 20 min or so, so He was there)

Endometrial cancer is fed by estrogen and the ovaries produce the estrogen, I now have to get the ovaries out, had we known of the cancer prior to the hysterectomy I would have had them taken out then but we had no idea till the final pathology. I was put in touch with a radiation oncologist named Dr. Walter Wong and he did not want to start radiation unless he absolutely had to so he put me in touch with an Gynecological Oncologist named Dr. David Hoogerland. This was the deciding doctor if he said radiation then it was to happen if he decided to take the ovaries then that was to be done as well. It all lay on his hands. He chose to take the ovaries and some lymph nodes to make sure the cancer did not spread anywhere else.(Chris was there holding my hand) That surgery was done two days ago on September 29, 2003. Chris was there and very worried as well, because the surgery took twice as long as it was suppose to. He sat there waiting in the room, I even packed a lunch for him to eat prior to going to the hospital he ate it in the room while waiting) I will have those pathology results in a day or two.

I am sharing this story so that if you or someone you love is going through any of this please be more persistent than I was in dealing with this as it could have been caught five years ago when It was treatable with out surgery having to take place.

I want to personally thank the doctors involved in this whole process

Dr. Michael A Jacobs P.A. Aurora Hospital Kenosha, WI

Dr. Kenneth Raskin OBGYN Aurora Hospital Kenosha, WI

Dr. Walter Wong Radiation Oncology Aurora Hospital Kenosha, WI

Dr. David L Hoogerland Gyn Oncologist Columbia St Mary’s Milwaukee, WI

If it wasn’t for Dr. Jacobs for being genuinely concerned this could be getting worse as I type here today.

I also want to thank my family for being there through this whole process and doing anything they could to help out. My children Ivan, Nathan, and Nicole Abreu for helping me when I was down from surgery. They are ages 14, 13, 11 and are the best you could ever hope for in children

And My boyfriend Christopher Lee for being at my side this whole time and spending the whole day in the hospital the days of the surgeries, afraid to leave because he might miss the doctor, afraid for me. And still is to this day.

I couldn’t ask for better people in my life as I have today and I have God to thank for that.

The results for the final Pathology have been in for a while and I waited till I saw the doctor and to have them explained in full.

I am for now Cancer FREE.

I guess you could say that I am a survivor and plan to remain that way. All the prayers and all the people who were at my side the whole time and still are well you are the reason not to mention that I had a reason to fight.

That Reason Is You.

THANK YOU!!!!!
