Bonsai literally translates from Japanese into English as "the art of growing a tree in a pot." Of necessity, it is also the art of growing the trees very small. As a practical matter, any type of tree can be a bonsai, provided it is grown and tended in a pot. There are only two types, indoor and outdoor, but there are as many styles as an owner can imagine.
The practice originated in China and was brought to Japan around A.D. 800 when the Japanese invaded China. Since then, bonsai has remained a predominately oriental art. But, with more people visiting Japan (including Larry), the practice has picked up in America.
Give a bonsai as a gift and you will be rewarded with the reaction of the recipient.
Many people tell Larry that in high pressure jobs - especially doctors - that working with bonsai trees is the most relaxing thing in the world. We're in a fast moving world, but when you are at home sitting with your trees, you can get lost thinking and working on your trees and forget everything else.
Prices at The Bonsai Store range from $25 for a young tree to $600 for mature specimens as old as 60 years. The store also carries a large assortment of bonsai pots, figurines and accessories.
Larry is available for one-on-one instructions on how to care for your Bonsai. Special classes are available for people just starting out in the hobby of bonsai. Please call for class fees.
