The Budgerigar.

The Budgerigar.

Common Names: Budgerigar, Budgie, Parakeet
Scientific Name: Melopstittacus undulatus
Origin: Budgies are originally from the grasslands and woods of central and southern Australia.

Size: Small, at around 8 inches in length from the beak to the tip of the tail.
Average Lifespan: The average Budgie lives between 5 and 9 years, although some have lived well into their teens!
Sex: Generally in The normal, dominant colors,  Males will  have Bright blue Cere's (fleshy part where the nostrils are directly about the beak.) Recessive pied, lutino, albino males have Lite purple, purple, or Pink cere's. Most females will generally have white, light tan, brown, or dark brown cere's.
Price: Fairly cheap, The average cost for a budgie is 10-20$ untame and 35-50$ Tame. Can be found in almost any pet store in the USA.

Personality: Because of their small size, they are easy to keep and care for, making them a wonderful option for children or those that lack the time required to maintain a larger bird. They are a snap to clean up after, inexpensive to feed, They can be noisy little birds yet their not that loud in volume, and can easily be kept in a small condo or apartment. I currently have 8 budiges and I currently live in a 2bedroom apartment! My neighbors dont even know i have birds! Even with their small size, Budgies are big on brains and personality. Many have been taught to whistle tunes and talk, and can be just as intelligent as some larger bird species. With proper training and socialization, they can be a delightful addition to almost any family.

General Care: Budgies are easy to care for. Generally a cage of about the size of 18in x 18in x 18in is Ideal for One Budgie. Bigger is always better. Budgies like cages that are Longer rather then Higher, so a cage let say 18in H x 18in W x 30in L would be awsome! The bar spacing size should be NO bigger then 1/2in! We dont want our budgie getting it's head stuck in between the bars!

Food and Health:  Fresh water and Fresh Budgie seed mix (Bird food: Kaytee Fiesta Parakeet food at Drs. Foster & Smith) every day. Fresh Cuttlebone Cuttlebone Bird Beak Conditionershould be provided at all times for Vitamins and minerals. Millit Spray treat once to twice a week. Golden Sunburst MilletMineral Block Kaytee Fortified Mineral Bird TreatsIs provided for extra minerals that they might be missing from their normal daily seed mix. I also like to offer Kaytee Honey treat sticks http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/swatch_image.cfm... about once a week. My Budgies Love these treats and there usually gone in minutes! Budgies although Small in size, they can be a little messy. I like to use the hooded feed/water cups Clean Cup Feeders/Waterers since ive starting using these, the seeds on the floor have cut in half!   Do NOT feed your budgie chocolate, avocado, apple cores, anything salty or caffeinated. In addition, it is not a good idea to feed budgies cheese. Birds are lactose intolerant and cannot handle large amounts of lactose in their digestive tracts.

Maintance: I probably spend about an hour a week cleaning up after the 8 budgies I have in my apartment. Which includes washing perches, changing newspaper in the cages cleaning trays, washing food and water dishes, cleaning toys and inspecting them for damage. Cant beat an hour a week for 8 birds!
All in All budgies are Great Pets! Cheap, easy to take care of, and they Can be just as friendly and Tame as some of those Larger Expensive parrots you see in the stores. I highly reccomend a budgie as a pet to anyone thinking about getting a bird!
