Welcome to BOLD Nashville, 2008!

Wonderfully Made Childbirth is excited to be BOLD this year. We are a Nashville business committed to supporting women and families through the childbearing years. This September, we are ecstatic to be bringing the BOLD movement, for the first time ever, to Nashville, and Tennessee, as a whole, as an international effort to celebrate and reflect on women-centered birth.

Women’s birth experiences have a profound impact on their adjustment to motherhood and how they may bond with their baby. Postpartum mood disorder rates are rising and there are many women who have a difficult time reconciling their birth experiences. Birth is not just a women’s issue, it is a human-race issue.

The BOLD vision is to inspire communities around the world to create a new, woman-centered, global culture surrounding birth through education, truth, and action. Nashville is going to get the chance to be a part of this global movement.

Birth – A Play by Karen Brody

As part of BOLD, we are organizing a production of Karen Brody’s play Birth at the Bongo Java After-Hours Theatre this September. Birth is a play based on over one hundred interviews Ms. Brody conducted with mothers who gave birth between 2000 and 2004. It tells the true stories of 8 women and their birth experiences, painting a portrait of how low-risk, educated women in the United States are giving birth today. The play is exciting, challenging, and provides an inside view on what birth can look like for different women.

Following the play, we will be holding a talk back panel made up of a local home birth midwife, hospital-based midwife, pediatrician, obstetrician, and doula to discuss reactions to the play, what birth issues exist in our own community, and how we can create change.

Red Tent Event

In addition to the play, Birth, we are also hosting at least one Red Tent Event. This event is an opportunity for Nashville area moms to come and share their birth stories in a sacred, safe space. These stories will become part of an international “Library of Birth Truths” that BOLD is compiling from stories around the world.

Birth is something that affects us all and, as a community, we need to come together to support healthier, more positive outcomes for all women. You can be a part of this exciting event and be BOLD with us in 2008.
