The House
in Nazareth
Inside the house the front door opened into the main
room. To the left, against the far wall, was a large
black wood-burning iron stove with an oven and all the
family meals were cooked there. To the immediate right
of the door was a wooden dining table and chairs, and
further over to the right wall, a seating area with rugs
on the floor. Behind
this room, through a door on the rear wall, was the
sleeping and bathroom accommodation. Lighting was by
lamps on small shelves on the walls. Walls and doors and
shutters were unpainted. It was a normal house of the
time, comfortable and warm.
Saint Joseph had a workshop attached to the family
home in Nazareth. Imagine the house as seen from the
front, two shuttered windows with a door between. On the left as you approach
the door is a covered area, a little wider than a driveway
and with a roof.
That area and another along the rear of the house, forming
an L shape, was the workshop. He was not only a
carpenter, he was a cabinet maker. I saw the fine
designs he tooled on the cupboards he made. Saint Joseph
made all
the furniture in the home and the shutters. He later had
a donkey cart to deliver the cabinets he made for others
and to
collect the wood he used. Behind the workshop was a
garden space. Water jars were stored at the rear of the
house. Our Lord helped carry the water from the well and
groceries from market. Our Lady sewed, cooked, cleaned
as mothers do.
The house in Egypt was similar in size. I only saw
the outside, two windows with a door between but built
of a different stone.
The family attended the local synagogue in Nazareth.
Our Lady and Saint Joseph had been educated at home by
their parents, as was the custom.
Our Lord said He is 6 feet tall exactly and Our Lady is
5 feet 6 inches tall.
Dorcas
Some of Our Lord's garments were made by Tabitha [Dorcas]. I
saw this lady, who has the loveliest large doe - like brown eyes. She is very beautiful. I was shown her fine
stitching. I saw too when she had died. Saint Peter
was seated beside her bed, the family was weeping and he
raised her from the
dead.
Our Lady sewed and made clothes for the family. Dorcas
made some of their clothes.
