GARDEN TREATS FOR YOUR GOATS!!
Spring and Summer are especially busy for us here at Boercrossing. Besides the actual care for our goats....we also have a very large garden to plant and maintain. The harvesting of our "goodies" not only benefits our family....but our animals as well. Here is a list of some "treats" that our goats benefit from as very eager recepients: (This will be expanded as time permits.)
Note: It should be remembered that vegetation begins to lose vitamin potency from the moment it is harvested. It is much more preferable to harvest the vegetables just before feeding your animals. Whenever we prepare meals, we harvest just before preparation and any cuttings or trimmings of tomatos, cukes, etc. are given to our goats....thereby eliminating waste.
Artichokes -- Leaves
Carrots
Collards
Cucumbers
Lettuce....all types
Mellons
Pumpkins (Seeds are well renowned worm repellents)
Squash.....any type they can get!
Sweet Potato Skins
Swiss Chard....mature root as well
Turnips--Greens and Root
Tomatoes.... whole tomatoes or trimmings and cores....never feed tomato or potato leaves to goats as they are poisonous.
Herbs: Parsley (Very high in vitamins and repel worms), onion tops and bulbs, garlic,
fennel, lemon balm (said to increase milk yield), sage, mints, thyme
(added to food as worm repellent),
