Boatside, Aberedw

Boatside

The Cider Mill at Boatside is situated on the left bank of the River Wye about one mile north of the pretty village of Aberedw. The buildings date from the early nineteenth century, and until the 1990s had belonged to successive generations of the Probert family.

The present owners have restored the near derelict buildings into two dwellings, and a ground floor holiday apartment. This is situated in what was once the cider mill, where apples from the adjoining orchard were crushed and made into cider.

The old market town of Builth Wells is approximately three miles away, as is the Royal Welsh showground. Ten miles or so down the valley is the town of Hay on Wye, famous for its second hand bookshops, whilst Rhayader and the Elan Valley is only half an hours drive away. The spa town of Llandrindod Wells is also a short distance by road.

The Farm offers a variety of wildlife. Many species of birds can be seen, including woodpeckers, nuthatches and goldfinches, whilst occasionally a kingfisher may be glimpsed beside the river, or buzzards seen circling overhead. Red Kite are increasingly common visitors.

If you are really fortunate you may spot an otter in the river, or late in the evening a pipistrelle or long-eared bat may frequent the riverbank. There are also water voles, and a rare sight is a slow worm basking in the sunshine on the stone wall near the waters' edge.
