Welcome Boat Hippies! No yachties here.
What is a Boat Hippie?
When people think about sailing, the first image they have in mind is that of a Yachtie. You know, member of the local Yacht Club, big shiny expensive boat, the women wear high heals on the dock, and the men are wearing those goofy navy caps. While there is nothing wrong with any of those things if that's what floats your boat, there are many other types of sailors out there, racers, cruisers, weekenders, live-aboards. Those descriptions are not mutually exclusive of the others. Many Live-aboards are cruisers. Some weekenders are racers and vice versa. I enjoy all aspects of sailing as described above except the high heels on the dock. We live aboard our 1966 sailboat. I enjoy racing and cruising. My husband just likes to cruise. Our daughter likes to play her gameboy while doing any of the above, and the Kitty Mon likes to sleep.
Boat Hippies come in many forms and from all points of the spectrum. We are not necessarily of the "tree-hugging" hippie type but some are. Many are Live-Aboards at various
marinas. We have a communal nature. We gather in the common areas for
drinks at sundown, or any other time. We hang out at the pool, fire up
the grill and bake in the sun. We help each other work on our boats
and in any other way we can.
