According to the Residential Code of New York State....

§RR702.4.2 Gypsum backer. Gypsum board utilized as the base or backer board for adhesive application of ceramic tile or other nonabsorbent finish material shall conform with ASTM C 630 or C 1178. Water-resistant gypsum backing board shall be permitted to be used on ceilings where framing spacing does not exceed 12 inches (305 mm) on center for 1/2 inch thick (12.7 mm) or 16 inches (406 mm) for 5/8-inch-thick (15.9 mm) gypsum board. All cut or exposed edges, including those at wall intersections, shall be sealed as recommended by the manufacturer.

According to the Building Code of New York State....

§1003.3.3.3.1 Dimensional uniformity. Stair treads and risers shall be of uniform size and shape. The tolerance between the largest and smallest riser or between the largest and smallest tread shall not exceed 0.375 inch (9.5 mm) in any flight of stairs. (Note: The previous code was 1/8")

 

According to the Plumbing Code of New York State....

§P305.8 Protection against physical damage. In concealed locations where piping, other than cast-iron or galvanized steel, is installed through holes or notches in studs, joists, rafters or similar members less than 1.5 inches (38 mm) from the nearest edge of the member, the pipe shall be protected by shield plates. Protective shield plates shall be a minimum of 0.062-inch-thick (1.6 mm) steel, shall cover the area of the pipe where the member is notched or bored, and shall extend a minimum of 2 inches (51 mm) above sole plates and below top plates.
