The year was 1957 when a band of kids in an equestrian drill team decided to form a group of their own. They had the idea that through proper guidance and the teaching of horsemanship, they could become an integral part of the development of its members. They chose the motto Leadership Through Guidance, and worked to instill the qualities of horsemanship, teamwork, and dedication that have kept the organization running for over forty years.

Consistency in its leadership has been a critical component to Shadows survival. Only four Regimental Commanders have overseen the organization in its full years: Colonel Herrick, Radike, Bigbee, and Chefalo. These remarkable people have influenced the lives of thousands of kids throughout the years. Colonel Chefalo currently leads our way, Colonel Radike continues to be the pillar of strength to us that she has always been, and Colonel Bigbee returns each year to help judge our shows.

In 1994, Shadows opened the Agua Dulce post. Blue Shadows has run two posts concurrently a few times in the past, but never with the success of these past years. The troop members, officers, and parents of both posts have made this possible. In May of 1998, Blue Shadows premiered on Fox sports West 2 Horseworld. Platoon Sergeant (at the time) Erin Shelley contacted the show’s web page and told them about our organization. Soon after, they came out and filmed Troop C of the Lake View Terrace post.

Since 1966, Blue Shadows has traveled throughout California and Nevada to appear in parades, exhibitions, and competitions. In June of 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2002 Blue Shadows presented a drill at the Western States Drill Team Championships in Reno, Nevada. The Junior Advanced Troop was also awarded ETI Drill Team Champion at their 2001 championships in Burbank.
