Phase III: Fall Required Activities

 

Opening Event
Held on August 19th (the Sunday night before classes begin). The Opening Event is your introduction to and first experience in your theme. At the event, you will meet others in your theme as well as Blue Chip staff members. To make up Opening Event, check in with a Blue Chip staff member during the first week of classes to receive your Blueprint and any information you have missed.

Fall Assistant Theme Coordinator Meeting-1
You will meet with your Assistant Theme Coordinator at the beginning of the Fall semester (by October 1) to discuss ideas for your Personal Leadership Plan. There is no make-up for the Fall Assistant Theme Coordinator Meeting-1. Contact your ATC to set up your meeting.

Fall Assistant Theme Coordinator Meeting-1 Event Form

Personal Leadership Plan-Administration
Plan out your Personal Leadership Plan for gaining competency in Administration.  You will complete your plan at the beginning of Fall semester and complete your project by the end of Fall semester. There is no make-up for the Personal Leadership Plan-Administration.

  • The project must include a significant role in the behind-the-scenes administration of a large-scale event or within a position in an organization. OR
  • The project must involve designing, coordinating, and/or tabulating assessments or surveys for a program, retreat, or event and making program recommendations.

Personal Leadership Plan-Facilitation
Plan out your Personal Leadership Plan for gaining competency in Facilitation. You will complete your plan at the beginning of Fall semester and complete your project by the end of Fall semester. There is no make-up for the Personal Leadership Plan-Facilitation.

  • The project must include a significant element of facilitating discussions or activities in a group of at least five, must involve a significant amount of facilitation time totaling three hours in one or multiple sessions, and can take on a variety of forms including facilitating programs, workshops, classes, etc.

Blue Chip Symposium
Held on September 15th. You will participate in a half-day workshop series covering the Blue Chip program, excellence through leadership, and being a role model as a leader. The make-up for Blue Chip Symposium is to attend 3 ATLAS workshops of your choice (schedule located at www.union.arizona.edu/atlas) and the following workshops: Preventing Hazing (ATLAS workshop) and Protect your Webutation (ATLAS workshop or NCLC workshop).

Fall Interphase
This event will offer you the opportunity to learn more about issues within your theme and meet Phase II, III, and IV students in your theme.  Interphases are offered at the beginning of each semester. Contact your Theme Coordinator for make-up information. Interphases have occurred for Fall 2007.

Fall Mentor Meeting

You will get a chance to meet with your mentor to learn more about each other. There is no make-up for the Mentor Meeting.

Fall Community Service
At a minimum, you will be responsible for ten hours of individual service per semester in Phase II. The Service Coordinators will help you find projects to meet your needs and help the community. Stay tuned to the Blue Chip listserv and check out the website for information on service opportunities as well. There is no make-up for Fall Community Service.

Fall Leadership & Involvement Transcript (LIT)
The LIT provides students the opportunity to begin documenting their leadership and extra-curricular activities utilizing an official University source. You are expected to begin an LIT during Phase I and continue adding to it throughout your time in Blue Chip. There is no make-up for Fall LIT.

Fall Leadership Portfolio
The portfolio will allow you to capture the activities and leadership involvement during college, stay orga­nized, and create a display to show during job or leadership position interviews. You can use your portfolio for job interviews, scholarship processes, and keeping track of your leadership experiences. You will prepare and present your portfolio in your theme class. There is no make-up for the Fall Leadership Portfolio. The following information should be in your portfolio:

Equiss
Attend Equiss, a 3-day social justice retreat for all Phase III students from January 18th-20th, 2008 at Triangle Y Ranch Camp. The make-up for Equiss is to apply to attend the Equiss retreat in January 2009.

Plan out your Personal Leadership Plan for gaining competency in Diversity.  You will complete your plan at the beginning of Spring semester and complete your project by the end of Spring semester. There is no make-up for the Personal Leadership Plan-Diversity.

  • The project must contribute to your and/or others’ understanding of diversity, multiculturalism, or social justice, involve a significant amount of time totaling three hours, and can take on a variety of forms including but not limited to: Presenting or facilitating a session on diversity, serving as an activist, being on a board/committee for diversity-related issues, or planning and coordinating a diversity-related program.

Personal Leadership Plan-Self-Directed Theme Project
Plan out your Personal Leadership Plan for gaining competency in your theme area. You will complete your plan at the beginning of Spring semester and complete your project by the end of Spring semester. There is no make-up for the Personal Leadership Plan-Self-Directed Theme Project.

  • The project must focus on creating positive change in an area related to your theme.  It is important to create this self-directed learning experience around educating yourself, developing skills, and contributing to change related to this theme area.  This project can take on any form.  You are encouraged to be creative.

State of the Chip
Attend our yearly State of the Chip from 4-5pm on January 30th in the Ballroom for our Blue Chip mid-year update and to learn about new happenings in Blue Chip and Leadership Programs. The m
ake-up for State of the Chip is to review the information covered by clicking on State of the Chip Info and fill out the State of the Chip Event Form.

C.H.I.P. Series-Career Preparation Workshop or Graduate School Preparation Workshop
Both of these sessions are great tools in helping you in your transition from college into the “real world.”  Whether you are starting a job or headed to graduate school right after college, life after college is different.  These workshops will help prepare you for the changes you are about to encounter.  Choose from either the Career Preparation Workshop or the Graduate School Preparation Workshop.  Workshops offered for Spring semester are listed below. There are no make-ups for either workshop.

Fireside Chats

Ever had questions for the President of the University or the Mayor of Tucson? Fireside Chats are an opportunity for you and a small group of your peers to sit down with an established leader and hear his or her story and ask the questions you have always wondered about.  You will need to attend 3 throughout the year and submit and Event Form for each. There are no make-ups for Fireside Chats. The following Fireside Chats are scheduled for the Spring semester:

Young People for was formed by People for the American Way Foundation and it offers "resources, guidance, and a warm variety of ongoing opportunities for young leaders to connect with other progressive leaders and organizations, plan and execute projects of their choosing, and learn valuable leadership, communication, organizaing, collaboration and advocacy skills."

 

Gilbert Davidson, Deputy Town Manager, Marana AZ Tuesday April 22, 2008 3:00 PM Pima Lodge
Gilbert Davidson is the Deputy Town Manager for the Town of Marana.  He directly oversees the Development Services Center, and the Operations and Maintenance Department.  Gilbert came to the Town of Marana from the City of Wilcox where he served as the City Manager.  He has a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Arizona, and is involved with a number of University Boards and Commissions.  In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for Arizona Town Hall, and is involved with the Arizona City County Management Association and the International City County Management Association.

Chuck Wunder is the Operations Chief for the Green Valley Fire District where he
is responsible for all aspects of fire and EMS activities including: suppression
activities, training, fleet and facilities, and special operations.

 

Community Justice Boards  Tuesday Aprili 29, 2009 1:00 PM CSIL Conference Room
Now located throughout Pima County, Community Justice Boards (CJBs) operate on the principles of balanced and restorative justice while primarily focusing on juvenile accountability and building competencies for our youth and their families. CJBs are comprised of specially-trained volunteers from communities throughout Pima County. With guidance, training, and support from the County Attorney’s Office, these volunteers hold Family Conferences to learn more about the youth, their families, and the circumstances surrounding the offense.

Service Showcase
Your Phase III Theme Activity Board will put together a display of your theme events and
attend the Service Showcase on April 23rd from 3:00-5:00pm in the Union Ballroom to share your experience. You will need to plan to attend at least 1 hour of the Service Showcase to answer questions about your project and see what the other teams/themes in Blue Chip have been working on. If you cannot attend for a minimum of 1 hour at the Service Showcase, you will need to make up the event by writing a 3 page paper about the underlying issue you addressed in one of your two theme events.
