Phase I

Phase I: Fall Required Activities

Opening Event
Held on August 19th (the Sunday night before classes begin). The Opening Event is your introduction to and first experience in Blue Chip. At the event, you will meet your team, your Team Leader, other Blue Chip students, Blue Chip staff, and several university administrators. To make up Opening Event, check in with a Blue Chip staff member during the first week of classes to receive your Blueprint and any information you have missed.

Fall Phase I Team Meetings
Each Phase I team has a Phase III Team Leader who will hold weekly meetings to help build your foundation as a leader. Your team is made up of a group of peers and is a great way to make friends. Absences may occur for circumstances beyond your control. If this happens you must contact your Team Leader prior to the meeting you will miss (refer to the attendance policy). You are responsible for all materials covered in missed meetings. You may miss no more than 2 excused team meetings per semester. If you missed 3 meetings, you will need to make up one of the meetings you missed by attending an ATLAS workshop that covers the content you missed. The ATLAS workshop schedule is located at www.union.arizona.edu/atlas. If you missed more than 3 meetings in a semester, you will need to meet individually with a Blue Chip staff member to discuss your continuation in the program.

Blue Chip Symposium
Held on September 15th. You will participate in a half-day workshop series covering the Blue Chip program, excellence through leadership, and being a role model as a leader. The make-up for Blue Chip Symposium is to attend 3 ATLAS workshops of your choice (schedule located at www.union.arizona.edu/atlas) and the following workshops: Preventing Hazing (ATLAS workshop) and Protect your Webutation (ATLAS workshop or NCLC workshop).

Blue Sync
Held on October 5th. You will participate in a very entertaining lip-sync performance with your team in this talent show for Phase 1 teams. The make-up for Blue Sync is to work with your Team Leader to lead a teambuilder for your Phase I team.

Phase I Team Advisor Meeting
This is your chance to meet with your Team Advisor, learn about what he or she does on campus, and discuss the importance of a mentor and how he or she will be a support for you throughout your university career. Talk to your Team Leader to learn who your Team Advisor is. To be completed by October 14th. There is no make-up for the Phase I Team Advisor Meeting.

Fall Theme Event
Each semester students will be expected to attend one theme event. Theme events are coordinated by Phase III students. You may not attend an event in the same theme area both semesters. You are encouraged to attend more than one event each semester. Events will be provided in following themes: Eco, Service, Global, Arts, and Social Entrepreneurial. There is no make-up for the Fall Theme Event.

DISCOVER Program
This is an opportunity to begin your file with Career Services and a chance to learn more about your career preferences. This interactive computer program will examine your likes and dislikes and will generate a list of potential career paths. Go to
http://www.career.arizona.edu/students/?discover to take the DISCOVER. You will need to print out your results to put in your portfolio. There is no make-up for DISCOVER.

Mentor Brainstorm
This is your chance to get to know professionals on campus and identify 3 potential leadership mentors who you think you can learn from. There is no make-up for Mentor Brainstorm.

Fall Community Service
At a minimum, you will be responsible for five hours of individual service per semester in Phase I. The Service Coordinators will help you find projects to meet your needs and help the community. Stay tuned to the Blue Chip listserv and check out the website for information on service opportunities as well. There is no make-up for Fall Community Service.

Fall Leadership & Involvement Transcript (LIT)
The LIT provides students the opportunity to begin documenting their leadership and extra-curricular activities utilizing an official University source. You are expected to begin an LIT during Phase I and continue adding to it throughout your time in Blue Chip. You can register for the LIT at
www.union.arizona.edu/lit. The $5 fee is waived for Blue Chip students. It can take up to 2 weeks to approve your LIT registration, so you will want to plan ahead for registering. There is no make-up for Fall LIT.

Fall Leadership Portfolio
The portfolio will allow you to capture the activities and leadership involvement during college, stay orga­nized, and create a display to show during job or leadership position interviews. You can use your portfolio for job interviews, scholarship processes, and keeping track of your leadership experiences. You will prepare and present your portfolio to your team. Your Team Leader must approve your portfolio completion. There is no make-up for the Fall Leadership Portfolio. The following information should be in your portfolio:

Phase I: Spring Required Activities

State of the Chip
Attend our yearly State of the Chip from 4-5pm on January 30th in the Ballroom for our Blue Chip mid-year update and to learn about new happenings in Blue Chip and Leadership Programs. The make-up for State of the Chip is to review the information covered by clicking on State of the Chip Info and filling out the State of the Chip Event Form.

Team Service Project
You will get a chance to participate in a semester-long service project with your Phase I team on any social issue of your choice. There is no make-up for the Team Service Project. If you missed a team event related to the service project, talk to your Team Leader about ways to make up this experience.

Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI)
By completing this activity, you will gain insight into your behaviors and personality as well as increase your knowledge of others’ personalities. You will find that understanding personality types can explain all sorts of behavior, and will be an asset in your leadership tool belt. There is no make-up for the MBTI. You need to sign up ahead of time in the MBTI book in the Blue Chip area. Sessions are limited to 40 participants. Sessions are offered:

Field Day
Held on Saturday March 1st from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Rincon Vista fields, you will get an opportunity to participate in an event where Phase I teams engage in a variety of team-based activities. The make-up for Field Day is TBD.

        The Desert Museum Experience Wednesday, April 9, 2008 5:00 pm.  Cactus Grill.
 A quick overview of the vastly diverse ecological community of the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, located here in                      Tucson.  We will provide fun animal facts, and discuss some of the indigenous creatures native to Arizona.  We will also                 have a brief discussion on how to preserve the Desert Museum

        Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation "Walk in Wednesday" Wednesday, April 16, 2008 6:00 pm  SAAF (375 S. Euclid Ave)
This event and a weekly one help by SAAF.  It provides and outlet for volunteers to contribute to one of SAAF's purposes             of diminishing and inhibiting the spread of AIDS, through the creation of hand-outs, packs of relevent products/items              to fulfill this purpose of awareness and safety.

       A Glance at Goya's Prints Tuesday April 22, 2008 1 pm UA Art Museum.

We will go to the UA Art Museum to see the Goya's print exhibit.  We will learn about Goya and significance of his prints and how they influence future generations.

Theme Selection
At the end of Phase I, you will select your interest theme in which you will develop your leadership skills in Phases II–IV. You will also enroll in HED 297, a two-credit leadership course focused on your selected theme, for Fall semester Phase II. Themes include Arts, Eco, Global, Service, and Social Entrepreneurial. There is no make-up for Theme Selection. You will need to select your theme by March 28th, 2008.

The Theme Fair will be held Tuesday March 4th at 6:00 pm in the Pima Lodge to help you learn more about the themes.

Service Showcase
Your Phase I Team will put together a display of your team service project and attend the Service Showcase on April 23rd from 3:00-5:00pm in the Union Ballroom to share your experience. You will need to plan to attend at least 1 hour of the Service Showcase to answer questions about your project and see what the other teams/themes in Blue Chip have been working on. If you cannot attend for a minimum of 1 hour at the Service Showcase, you will need to make up the event by writing a 3 page paper about the underlying issue causing a need for your service project.

Capstone Presentation Attendance
At the end of each semester, graduating seniors will make formal presentations certifying their leadership development. This is a great way to get a deeper understanding of where Blue Chip will take you in the next couple of years. Attend 2 presentations of your choice. Capstone times and dates will be listed here as they are set. There is no make-up for the Capstone Presentation Attendance.
