What is Massage ?

Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy involving of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax the body and mind, stimulate the blood flow, and tone the body.

Massage does much more than create a pleasant sensation on the skin, it also works on the soft tissues(the muscles, tendons, and ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Although it largely affects those muscles just under the skin, its benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly even the organs themselves.

Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), improving the elimination of waste throughout the body.

Massage can help calm the mind which can stimulate the body to heal itself and aid with positive emotions.

How can massage help me?

Massage can help in many ways.  Here are some of the benefits.

1.Relaxing.
2.Lymphatic Drainage

3.Healing.
4.Can aid digestion and help IBS.
5.Eases tension, stiffness, and pain
6.Improves circulation.
7.Enhances well-being

What is Swedish massage?

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressure..

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.

Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stres, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress managements. It also has many specific medical uses.

What is Aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy is recognised by many health professionals and practiced in hospitals, GP’s surgeries and hospices.  Many people mistakenly think of it as a beauty  treatment, but  as it provides much, much more and can be very beneficial. GP's have started to refer patients for aromatherapy sessions to help relieve a variety of symptoms from depression, stress or fatigue to menstral problems and infertility issues.

Aromatherapy massage combines the use of essential oils and therapeutic touch. The oils, which come from plants, are highly concentrated and very powerful. Essential oils possess natural healing properties – without harmful side-effects.

Each client will have different needs and therefore require a different blend of oils to aid their health.  I will discuss your needs before I meet with you and ensure I have the appropriate blend for you at your appointment.  As your symptoms inprove I may change the blend of oils used.  I usually mix the oils with a luxurious massage cream which will leave your skin feeling smooth and supple.

How many sessions should I have?

Regular massage can have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body mechanism, and so help to prevent unnecessary strains and injuries that might otherwise occur due to excess tension and any resulting structural weaknesses.

It is better to have a massage on a regular basis and continue for as long as possible rather than have many sessions, but for a short period of time.  The time between sessions will be recommended at the consultation.

Massage can stimulate or calm the nervous system and thus help reduce fatigue and will leave you with a feeling of renewed energy. At its best, massage has the potential to restore the individual physically, mentally and spiritually.

I am nervous and body aware, can I still have a massage?

Of course you can.  You can have a massge on a different part of your body, such as your head or face etc, through your clothes or I can talk you through the whole process and put your mind at ease.  During a massage you are ALWAYS covered with large towels or sheets and only the part of the body being worked on is uncovered i.e. the back.

As a professional I aim to tailor the treatment to your needs making it an enjoyable experience.  I would like to reassure you that I don't see a body as a body, I see it as a group of muscles, tendons and bones, therefore there is no need to feel self consious.

Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology (sometimes called zone therapy) is a therapy in which the nerve endings primarily in the feet are stimulated by specific massage techniques to effect changes in another part of the body and thereby create health and help overcome disease.

Although there is scriptural evidence to suggest that reflexology was being practised as far back as ancient Egypt, the science of reflexology used today was founded by Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear nose and throat surgeon. He noticed that pressure on specific areas of the body produced a anaesthetising effect on a related area. Developing his theory, he divided the body into ten equal zones which ended in the feet and hands.

In the 1930's a massage therapist called Eunice Ingham refined Dr Fitzgerald's zones and developed what is now known as 'reflexology'. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrored congestion or tension in a related part of the body. Therefore, treating the areas of the feet could have a relaxing and healing effect on different organs and tissues inside the body.

Maternity Reflexology during pregnancy

Maternity Reflexology is a wonderful healing therapy that can support you throughout your pregnancy and help prepare your body for childbirth. Regular Maternity Reflexology treatments encourage relaxation, something that is especially important at this time, and can help ease some of the common discomforts of pregnancy including:

  • Morning sickness and nausea
  • Backache
  • Heartburn
  • Insomnia
  • Mood swings
  • Constipation
  • Fluid retention
  • Anxiety
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

Maternity Reflexology treatments can also be carried out if you have gone beyond your "due date" and will promote deep relaxation. With the permission of your midwife, I am able to use special techniques to encourage the body to prepare for labour. Sometimes this results in the spontaneous onset of labour a few hours later, making medical induction unneccessary.
  • Reflexology can also help during labour and I would be more than happy to attend the hospital to perform reflexology whilst you are labouring to relax you.

    Fertility Reflexology

For many the pathway to parenthood is not easy and Fertility Reflexology can help those who are experiencing problems. A combined approach of Fertility Reflexology treatments and some moderations to lifestyle can greatly enhance the chances of natural conception and lead to a successful outcome.

I became very interested in fertility reflexology when I had unexplained fertility problems myself.  I attended weekly sessions and finally conceived.

Medical conditions that may affect fertility, such as Endometriosis and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) can also be treated effectively with reflexology and are especially helped by its' hormone balancing effects.

Reflexology can be very supportive for those undergoing medical fertility procedures, such as IVF, and can encourage relaxation and help ease anxiety and tension. Fertility Reflexology treatments also ensure that your body is in optimum condition before undergoing these procedures.

How can a facial help me?

When was the last time you treated yourself to a spa facial?  Getting facials will help you achieve a clearer complexion and make your skin look and feel healthier.

There are many benefits in having a facial. The face is always exposed to harmful substances and the weather.

A facial can give your skin a deep cleanse, exfoliation which can help to unclog your pores, a massage which will relax you and improve circulation in your face and moisturise to condition your skin.

A facial can also help slow down premature aging by custom-targeting your skin care. Keeping your skin hydrated will help keep it moist and stop dehydration.

Acupressure - what is it and how can it help?

Acupressure (a blend of "acupuncture" and "pressure") is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) technique derived from acupuncture. In acupressure physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points.  Unlike acupuncture no needles are used and presure is applied using the hands.

Acupressure is one of the therapies defined in naturopathy for healing of the body.  It is also known as the science of the nature as it relies on the bodies own mechanisms to cure the disease.  In acupressure, the healing power present inside the body is reinforced.  It is believed that the healing process is made possible by the currents in the body.  Acupressure is and ancient therapy and dates back almost 1000 years for healing purposes.
