Sometime in the middle of the nineteenth century, dog fanciers in England, Ireland, and Scotland began to explore with crosses among Bulldogs and Terriers, wanting to acquire for a dog that brought together the gameness of the terrier with the power and athleticism of the Bulldog. The outcome was a canine that embodied all of the virtues attributed to renowned warriors: strength, unconquerable bravery, and tenderness with loved ones. Settler from abroad brought about these bull and terrier crosses to the United States. The American Pit Bull Terrier's many abilities was not overlooked by livestock breeder and ranchers who put to use their for American Pit Bull Terriers guardianship, as catch dogs for semi-wild steers and hogs, to hunt, to drive herds, and as household protectors. On this day, the American Pit Bull Terrier proceeds to demonstrate its adaptability, competing triumphantly in Obedience, Tracking, Agility, Protection, and Weight Pulls, as well as Conformation.
The United Kennel Club was the first registry to acknowledge the American Pit Bull Terrier. U.K.C. founder C. Z. Bennett assigned U.K.C. registration number 1 to his own APBT, Bennett's Ring in 1898.
