To adopt a rat from me I request a few things. One, complete honesty. Why do you want a rat? Who will be caring for it? If it is a child please help him/her out. Watch to make sure the rat is well cared for and given plenty of attention.
The second thing I ask is patience. I cannot predict if a rat will or will not conceive when placed with another. They have a mind of their own and the means to not get pregnant. If the rat I was planning on breeding does not conceive I will let you know as soon as possible. I cannot predict how many kittens the rat will have, nor how many of what gender or variety. If you do not get the rat you want, I will put you on the reservation list for the next litter, and hopefully you will not be disappointed that time around.
If you reserve a rat and decide to not adopt it LET ME KNOW. Remember there are many people wanting rats and if you keep your spot on the reseravation list it prevents another person from being able to get a ratty.
I do not breed unless I have enough people interested. I don't like breeding and then being left with rats that nobody wants.
If you decide you no longer wish to have the rat, let me know, I charge a $10 fee for returning the rats (enough to buy extra food for the rat until I can find another home). If possible, I will find another home for the rat before you return it. Please try to rehome your rat yourself before you return him/her to me. For one, if the rat is carrying something it can put my rats at risk, secondly, it's not fair to me, who assumes you would have been a lifelong home. Please only return one to me for a valid reason, like allergys, moving to a place that won't allow a rat, financial or family crisis. Please, if you think you will become bored of the rat, don't adopt at all. If you rehome the rat to a friend, please email me their name, address and phone number, so I can check up on the rat later on, or notify them of any health issues in the rats family.

Rats should be treated like all other animals. Keep the cage clean, the food and water fresh, and give them plenty of attention!
Try not to use pine or cedar litter. It may be cheap, but it can also cause respiratory problems in rats. The best littler is CareFresh, or Yesterday's News.
Do not feed a rat junk food. Just because they eat it in the wild when they go through trash cans doesn't mean it's good for them. IF ITS NOT GOOD FOR YOU ITS NOT GOOD FOR THE RAT! For a complete list of rat a rat should not eat, go here
I feed my rats Mazuri Rodent Blocks, Purina Puppy Chow, and healthy leftovers. They also get Yogurt Drops (sold at the petstore), and dog biscuts as treats. Rodent Blocks should always be the main course of their food, and be available at all times. Take out soiled and old food from the cage.
Supervise all young children with rats. A rat can be patient and loving but if squeezed by a young child they could bite. Most of the time the rat is blamed but usually it's the child's fault. Rats can only handle so much. They normally will not bite if handled with care. Teach a child to be gentle and loving, and to not stick their fingers through the bars of the rats cage, especially if you made it a habit of feeding a rat through the bars. Do not let them pick up a rat, or swing a rat around by his tail. Thats not what they are for. Tails are for regulating heat for the rat. Not for easy pickup. If you follow those few simple guidelines, and handle the rat daily, you will not have any problems with biting. Instead you will have a loving rat who is eager to see you and be loved.
