BLUES LADIES PROMOTED TO DIVISION 1
Blaenavon Blues Ladies will be playing their football in the South Wales Women's League Division 1 this season after both divisions were restructured at the recent South Wales Women's League A.G.M.
This situation was not exactly what the Blues wanted, as the team are a very young team who are still developing and would have benefited from at least another season in division 2. Another reason why promotion may have come to early is that the squad lacks the strength in depth required to be competititive at this higher level, however the decision was taken out of the clubs hands. Looking at the position with a positive slant the team came through last season with only twelve players and most weeks only eleven players, also the coaching staff are more than confident that the girls will be up to the new challenge come September.
The Blues have been promoted after finishing third in division 2, but due to division 1 only having 6 teams the Blues along with Champions Caerphilly fifth placed Merthyr Tydfil and sixth placed Dinas Powys have all been promoted. Swansea City 2nds who finished second and Caerphilly Youth who finsihed fourth in division 2 could not be promoted due to the fact that they already have teams from their club competing in division 1. Teams already competing in division 1 include Swansea City 1st, UWIC, Pontypridd Town, Tir-y-Berth, Cambrian and Margam. So there will be some new venues for the Blues to travel to next season.
Looking on the bright side the Blues Ladies have nothing to lose or prove and a new challenge against stronger and more experienced teams will hopefully bring the best out of the girls as well as attracting new players to the club.
On that note if there are any players who are interested in joining a very young and very good ladies football team then please contact Steve on 07922 626330 or come along to training at the Memorial Ground on Wednesday 2nd July. Visit the grounds section of the website for directions.
