Aberaman Match Report

The Blues travelled to Aberaman (near Aberdare) to take on a newly formed side made up of mainly ex Pontypridd and Merthyr players now playing for Aberaman Athletic.

Not only were the girls faced with playing on the field they were thumped by Cardiff City in last year’s Welsh Cup semi final, but they had to play with only 10 players. This was due, mainly because of injuries and University commitments.

The Blues took the field on this most beautiful late September afternoon, with a defensive plan in mind. A formation of 4-4-1, allowing Tina French a free role up front. Miss Versatile, so far this season, Kirtsy Williams slotted into a more familiar role on the left hand side of the defence, and with this year’s Captain, Caitlin Tew, lining up slightly behind Tina, yet more as in a midfielding holding role.

Just when it seemed it couldn't get any worse, Aberaman took the lead within 5 minutes of the start with a thunderous effort, all of 30 yards out. Elisa in goal had no chance. It flew in off the cross bar. The Blues now knew that their task would be to limit Aberaman’s possession as much as possible, and for the next 30 minutes or so the Blues worked their socks off. Harassing, pressurising and competing at every opportunity, which lead, deservedly, to their equalizer. Another unstoppable effort from out wide on the right by Tina French. This was just the right up lifting tonic the girls needed to take them into the second half.

Having taken a well deserved rest at half time, taking on plenty of fluids, the girls set their stall out for the second half, by starting it the way they finished the first half. It must be said that Aberaman picked up their game and were looking to be the side who would score next as the Blues girls tired in the heat, but thankfully, any chances Aberaman created fell just short of quality and never really threatened Elisa in goal.

More and more the gaps were showing in the home side’s defence as they began to tire also, and the Blues still looked lively on the counter attack. It was with about 15 minutes to go when, once again Tina French struck. Accepting a perfect midfield pass inside Aberaman’s penalty box and slotting the ball past a flat footed goalkeeper, to score what turned out to be the winning goal.

Aberaman had lost heart. They tried their best but the Blues’ tails were up and could sense a more that deserved victory.

They would not pass, was the attitude, and they didn’t.

The 10 heroes of the day were Elisa, Kelly, Angela, Abbie, Kirsty, Angharad, Sian, Dionne, Caitlin and Tina.

Well done girls.

Loughor Match Report

Heroes to Zeros

The Blues took to the road once again, this time to the club furthest west in the division, namely Loughor, and with a full squad with one exception, Dionne.

Although the Blues took the lead after a quarter of an hour, scored by Sian, it was the home side that looked the better of the two sides. It must be said this was not the most entertaining encounters; both sides failed to put together any creative play, passes going awry on a regular basis, and whereas the Blues had a “never say die attitude” in the last game against Aberaman, they showed none of that fighting spirit on this occasion..

Loughor equalised 25 minutes into the first half from an uncharacteristic error by Elisa in goal. Failing to gather a cross from the right, this gave the Loughor striker an easy tap in.

Loughor took the lead, which they were to hold onto throughout the game, shortly before half time. Bad marking at a corner from the left allowed the home side’s other striker to have a free header.  She duly took full advantage of this, and headed powerfully home, to make the score line 2 – 1.

The second half was best forgotten. The Blues never raised their game to threaten the home side’s goal, and to be fair neither did Loughor force any further anxious moments in the Blues’ defence.

Let’s look forward to a much improved performance on Sunday October 25th when the Blues entertain Trefelin at home.
